If an #H5N1 pandemic starts tomorrow or in three months, there will be little mystery as to how it happened. The conditions are all there. They have been for a while.
So in some ways the more interesting question to me at the moment is: Why aren’t we in a pandemic yet?
Story here, 🧵 to come:

Why hasn’t the bird flu pandemic started?
Some scientists examining mutations found in H5N1 viruses fear major outbreak is imminent but others says pathogen remains unpredictable

This is a magnificent piece about how the NIH is “confronting health threats in a changing world,” here & worldwide

I fear that the men who Trump wants to lead HHS, which oversees NIH, and NIH will do untold damage; I hope I am wrong

How the US National Institutes of Health is confronting health threats in a changing world
The overall health and wellbeing of a population serves as a fundamental indicator of whether a society is meeting its people's most important needs. Achieving health for all people is only possible with educational opportunity, economic productivity, effective government, international cooperation, and peace. As the single largest public funder of biomedical, behavioural, and social sciences research worldwide, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a crucial role in promoting healthy societies.

Avian flu mortality has been high in humans for over 2 decades. So why are we now seeing only mild cases in US ag industry workers?

Lots of ideas on this but no clear answer yet.

Excellent deep dive by @helenbranswell.bsky.social 👇
Scientists who have studied #H5N1 #birdflu for years are flummoxed by the lack of severe cases among the 55 human cases the US has confirmed this year. I talked to lots to explore the theories of what's going on. www.statnews.com/2024/12/02/b...
Scientists confront a mystery: Why have U.S. bird flu cases been so mild?
The H5N1 bird flu outbreak in the U.S. has so far been shockingly mild. Researchers have some theories as to why.

Happy to share that I will start my group (Jan 2025) at the Iowa State University Vet school @iastateresearch.bsky.social We will explore molecular aspects of the pathogenesis and viral-host interactions of influenza and coronavirus relevant for animals and humans #NewPI #ISU #Influenza #Coronavirus

California Dept of Public Health confirms that the child tested positive for an #H5 #birdflu virus. Still needs to be confirmed by #CDC.
1. California's Dept of Public Health reports a #birdflu case in a child with no known contact with infected animals. They're looking into possible wild bird exposure.
Oddly, the press release doesn't say which type of bird flu (there are many). I'm assuming #H5N1. Specimen being sent to #CDC.

@medrxivpreprint.bsky.social showing that older folks have higher levels of antibodies that recognize #H5N1 viruses compared to younger individuals. Finally some good news for old people. 1/12
