Trump’s grievance, (and aim since his 1st term), is with NATO not the EU which even he, despite recent tariffs, would recognise as a major trading partner. Unless Europe fronts up both financially and militarily then Europe will be left holding the reins on behalf of NATO in Ukraine.

Trump’s long-term gripe is that EU nations are not spending 2%> GDP on Defence with the implication that the US is militarily propping up Europe as a result. The current situation is seeking to force Europe to amend its approach.

The world, in relation to the US, has changed…for the next 4 years at least. Previously held assumptions should be reviewed and/or abandoned…quickly.
