I also pinged an architect friend of mine and here’s what she had to say:
so, 10 years ago some significant projects I worked on were in the $1,500/sf range. This is huge, highly ornamental, in an extremely expensive location, and going to potentially plummet the reputation of builders involved (I’m looking at you Clark Construction) so yes I do believe the cost projections are going to be spent. There could be debate about whether that much should be spent. Basic schematics have been circulated on sites like Alt National Park but they probably won’t release real floor plans due to security concerns. There’s been a lot of buzz in architecture groups I’m in about the 999 occupancy number being publicized. 1000 occupancy triggers additional life safety requirements so that is probably intentional. However, that’s just the occupancy of the ballroom itself, not the whole addition, so if it were following code, it would still need enhanced life safety measures built in. The scale of it is insane. Twice as big as the entire White House. And since the East Wing previously had the bunkers under it there’s a good chance there will be new underground bunkers / safe rooms / unholy who knows what that’s part of the addition but not publicized in the program. Underground work will drive up the cost. As does gold leaf. There’s a good chance they’ll tent over the entire site soon so drones won’t be able to document what’s being built when they start excavating for foundations. The architect that was chosen without due process was a Trump nominee from his first term for the US Commission for Fine Arts, who championed the classical architecture movement Trump tried to require of all federal buildings and was roundly criticized by AIA and others. https://www.punchlistmag.com/p/what-to-know-about-james-mccrery-trump-s-white-house-architect-baf3a5b393403350

Ohhh a local police chief is pushing back against federal agents’ unauthorized an undisclosed use of their surveillance technology
Message from Chief Andy Illyn The Mukilteo Police Department recently became aware that the U.S Border Patrol and U.S. Homeland Security accessed and utilized the Flock Camera System in the City of Mukilteo, and nationwide. This access was made without our permission and contravenes our department's policy. The Mukilteo Police Department has not engaged in immigration enforcement activities and has not provided access to federal agencies for immigration purposes. The Flock System is a network of Automated License Plate Recognition Cameras used by our department and numerous police agencies around our state and nation. Locally, the system has assisted us by alerting us to stolen vehicles in our area, finding missing and vulnerable people, and locating suspects for domestic violence and other legitimate law enforcement functions. There are currently 10 cameras in the City of Mukilteo. Flock’s National Lookup Feature allowed unintended access by federal agencies through a national shared network. The Mukilteo Police Department was never notified that Flock had entered a pilot program with the US. Customs and Border Patrol. The Mukilteo Police Department reviews all requests to access our cameras and only grants permission to agencies within Washington State that are subject to the Keep Washington Working Act. In an abundance of caution, we have disabled the National Lookup feature. Chief Illyn made the following statement: “The Mukilteo Police Department values its longstanding partnerships with federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshal Service, DEA, FBI, and U.S. Postal Inspectors. These relationships are built on trust, transparency, and mutual respect. While we remain committed to collaboration on criminal investigations, trust and transparency are non-negotiable. When a partner circumvents local oversight and accesses systems without disclosure, it compromises the integrity of that relationship. We have taken immediate steps to secure our systems and prevent any further unauthorized access. We have been in continuous contact with our Flock Representatives to ensure the safety of our systems.” The Mukilteo Police Department will continue to monitor access and uphold the highest standards of integrity, ensuring our public safety technology remains secure, transparent, and aligned with the expectations of those we serve.
