“Conversation with Smaug”, by JRR Tolkien, for 1937’s “The Hobbit”.

I’ve no idea what state of mind Tolkien was in when he painted it. But every time I’ve seen it, and I’ve seen it a lot, I get the impression that he was having a really great time. It’s so zestful, in its details & as a whole.

I keep harping the last handful of years that we need to support the things that we love or they will disappear. What Katie has built at @bkswpicspdx.bsky.social is what you hope every comic store in the world could be. Please donate to keep it going.

The "Frieren angle" thing, apart from just being delightful, also completely demolishes the pathetic "AI is democratising art" argument. Someone struggling with a difficult drawing received advice from hundreds of strangers who just wanted to help them improve their art.

My top 3 can't-miss movie cliches:

1. Sequels that have actors come back as an identical relative of their character who died in the previous movie.
2. Nudity that's absurdly obscured by the mise en scène.
3. Soundtrack in a scene is revealed to be diegetic.
My top 3 can't-miss movie cliches:

1. Villain is killed whilst monologuing
2. Crusty, sour older relative gifts super-meaningful heirloom to young protagonist
3. Dog to the rescue!

Akira Kurosawa's epic retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear. A warlord's crimes come back to haunt him at the end of his life as he watches his family devour itself.

The squib in Nakadai's death scene in Sanjuro was so explosively bloody that the other actors were stunned in legitimate shock. Kurosawa kept that very first take in the final film.
