Dear President Gilliam, On November 13, 2025, the Boston University School of Social Work’s Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series will host a webinar titled “Antisemitism: What is it, What is it Not, and What to Do.” The event description opens by noting that “[a]ntisemitism is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of prejudice and hate, yet in this current historical moment, it is often misunderstood, minimized, or weaponized.” The description then invites community members to “[j]oin us as an experienced panel of scholars explores the historical roots of antisemitism, tracing how it has evolved over time and continues to shape public discourse.” The discussion will explore the historical roots of religious and racial antisemitism; discourses around antisemitism in the United States today; and antisemitism's relationship “with other forms of oppression, including racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia, while also acknowledging its unique characteristics.” Featured speakers will also highlight the work of Concerned Jewish Faculty & Staff, along with other interventions that can reduce antisemitism and promote an inclusive campus climate for all. We are pleased that Boston University’s administrative leadership shows no signs of bending to this bullying. That is essential and consistent with BU’s “Living Our Values” initiative. But we urge BU’s leadership to do more than quietly not fold. We urge BU’s leadership to also Live its Values by publicly denouncing this pressure campaign and to applaud the School of Social Work Equity and Inclusion Speakers Series and, specifically, this critical and timely event. Some might respond that in a moment of escalating repression, it is better for BU to lay low so as not to draw more attention. We disagree. Authoritarians feed on our silence. It is time for BU to raise its voice and model what real university leadership looks like. Boston University's upcoming event, "Antisemitism: What It Is, What It Is Not, and What to Do," represents a deeply troubling academic misstep at a time when antisemitic hate has reached record levels [1][2]. The framing and speaker selection raise serious red flags that this program may advance the narrative of the dangerous anti-Zionist movement -- a movement that routinely normalizes antisemitism and hostility toward Jews under the pretext of social justice. At a time when antisemitism has surged to record levels across the United States [1][2], Boston University must not allow any forum, or (purposely?) misleading program names, to distort the definition of antisemitism or to legitimize anti-Zionism, which has become the leading vehicle for contemporary antisemitic hate.
