Likes: collaboration, curiosity, compassion. Dislikes: competition, coercion, conformity.
The sad fact is for the most part all they have to do is expand categories to take advantage of the infrastructure that is already in place to do this to large swaths of the population. This is the why behind so many nonviolent crimes associated with poverty and trauma.

Just to be 1000% clear here:
This isn't an accident.
It was built into the 13th amendment.
It's fully intentional that it impacts people of color, especially Black folks, at the highest rates.
The carceral system is built to create cheap labor and disenfranchise marginalized folks.

I’m tried of losing people to abandonment, neglect, brutality, exposure, and other preventable causes. Can we please trade callous disregard for human suffering for a bit more compassion?

And, because it unfortunately has to be said, if your knee-jerk response to fear about what’s coming is “we survived the last round, we’ll survive this, too…”

All the people who didn’t survive the last round would beg to differ, if they were still alive to do so. Including a few friends.

The desire to control others through coercion and violence is a moral failing, not a mental illness.

The economy isn’t real. The frailty of human life is.

Making sure people have clear air and water; nourishing food; a safe, comfortable home; and other resources essential to survival is never a waste of money, time, or effort.

Incidentally, executive function is also the reason I don’t own any stove top water kettles anymore. I decided it was too dangerous after the 2nd time I checked out long enough for all the water to boil away & the bottom to burn off. Executive disfunction makes so many things more difficult.

If there is any specific moment that perfectly captures what executive function is to me, it’s the 1st time I found myself standing disoriented at the kitchen counter w/my pour-over filter ready to go & the electric kettle in my hand. I’d checked out mid-task long enough the water was tepid.

Please, just let me have one unremarkable year. That’s all. This year, my resolution is to find a way to live my life again rather than letting myself be subsumed into just trying to survive. And to spend some time taking pleasure in the company of people I love.
