most references to a living language being “ancient” get real weird real fast but talking about the ancientness of a language that’s barely a thousand years old feels like its own kind of weird

I only knew schmaltz as referring to chicken fat (I think you’re right that it’s the only English word just for that) and there was a tiny joy in learning that outside the U.S. context it frequently referred to goose fat. BIRD GREASE

a little mad that yiddish managed to spread its delightful schmutz (שמוץ) into english but SHLAYM never took off
