Historian. Politico Magazine contributing writer. NYT best-selling author, including Building the Great Society and Lincoln’s Boys. Twitter refugee. This place is nicer, but I still block antisemites.
Here is a Chitarelli campaign text I received 5 mins ago. Just your average mainstream Republican with a morbid fascination with girls’ bathrooms and lockerrooms.

Hey fellow Jerseyans. Don’t be fooled by Jack Chitarelli. He’s not a “normie” Republican. Those no longer exist. He’s MAGA. Like all MAGAs he’s an extremist, a hate monger, and has an unhealthy obsession with girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. This is a campaign text I just received.

Wishing all who observe Yom Kippur an easy and meaningful fast and a day full of reflection and peace.

This feels like a massive self own. Voters like national parks. They get testy when the IRS doesn’t return calls about tax refunds. I imagine ICE agents will be none to keen to work for free. Who exactly would all of this benefit politically? Not Republicans.

What a headline. It speaks to how much we’ve normalized this Supreme Court’s lawlessness. Imagine a world in which a Democratic president asked SCOTUS to void the Second Amendment and nullify citizens’ rights to own, say, hunting rifles. “Most experts say it’s legally dubious but…”

Set aside the clear implication (he wants to rig the 2026 elections.) If you don’t have mail-in ballots, and you don’t have voting machines, what? 150 million people cast paper ballots in person and then we hand count them?

I love Wordle, NYT Cooking, and the opinion section — @jamellebouie.net and David French chief among others. I learn from every one of their columns. But I mostly rely on other outlets for my hard news these days. Stuff like this is ridiculous. They weren’t “turned over” or “handed off.”

It’s like Donald Trump is doing a reboot of Brewster’s Millions, but with the American economy.
April 2, 2025 at 9:20 PM
NYT headline writers continue to launder Trump’s racism. This has nothing to do with “diversity.” They’re removing MLK’s autobiography and a Jackie Robinson bio from the library for the same reason he fired a Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs. They are trying to re-segregate American life.

“And I'm gonna tell you workers, 'fore you cash in your checks.
They say America First, but they mean America Next.”

Not that Bret Stephens’ opinion mattered to more than 3 swing state voters, but just remarkable that this guy spent months sounding the “I’m just not there yet” bell with regard to Kamala Harris. Another fool who just couldn’t get on board with the Black woman, despite her clear superiority.

This is how the Washington Post is describing Elon Musk’s criminal access to your tax returns, Social Security number, DOB and W2/1099. An “unusual request.”
February 17, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Which is one of many reasons why Musk gets no benefit of the doubt — zero, nada — when he flashes not one, but two, Nazi salutes.

I’m used to getting “fan mail” from the MAGA crowd. What’s striking is how unabashed they’ve become in openly spewing antisemitic bile. A quick Google search tells me this guy is a landscape photographer and artist, with a legitimate, upscale business. He felt no need to do this anonymously.

Just a little wrinkle. One has to just love the NYT for its consistency.

The amount of grift, self-dealing and oligarchic corruption about to commence is going to make 2017-21 look like an era of clean and honest government.
