Honestly, I don’t either. But it’s a super popular sub-genre, and I have gaming experience, so I thought maybe it’d be worth a try. The best explanation I’ve heard for the popularity is that it’s this era’s version of sword & sorcery power fantasies like Conan.

Specifically, I was thinking that the MC would be native to the fictional world (as opposed to a character from our world who is sucked into a virtual world or whatever). Like how the Tarnished in Elden Ring is aware of grace and runes and stuff, but most other NPCs aren’t.
