Yes, I knew about his mom (reporters often mention this, and the film Mississippi Masala, which I watched as a teenager when it came out.) News reporters generally just say his father is an academic, without any further details - but he's hugely influential in African studies...

I just now twigged that Zohran Mamdani is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, the Ugandan anthropologist and political scientist who teaches at Columbia and used to work at Makerere University. Why did I not know this? It was your post that alerted me to this... I loved Citizen and Subject (1996)
