The funny thing is the people who always bring up Bernie Sanders in my mentions always miss the fact that if I were a fanboy for any politician, it would be Obama. But we shouldn’t be a fanboy/girl for any of these people. They are our employees and we should hold them to work standards.

This is true in so many areas. People just want to know what the fucking rules are. We don’t have to like them; we want to feel like we understand the situation, that it’s not some impenetrable black box. That (here’s the hard part) a rational human being is in charge of things.
The insights I had were that you need to explain the rules and how you're enforcing them and accept the culture you have and make changes to the margins rather than try to make a place something it's not. Slate comments are small scale, but it could work for large scale moderation as well.
