There are a few reasons. Scientific results fly in the face of their authority over objective reality. You don't need real science when you can hoist up RFK Jr to spread conspiracy nonsense. They also want to cripple universities because they allow poor people to raise in economic class.

Imo the goal is to drive down the average wage of American workers (many Republicans are literally against minimum wage), so that CEOs and investors can maximize profit. They want to create a chasm between working and upper class.

Targeted tarrifs can be useful, but you need domestic support for the industry that you're tarriffing. Blanket tarrifs on a country makes no sense. Japan has a tarrif on shoes from other countries. They have a domestic shoe industry to protect. The US does not really.
