i will say that it's inaccurate to imagine the film as one which "punishes the audience for being invested". it's just very nonstandard in how it approaches comedic narrative; the characters matter more than anything else, and the convoluted background plot is just a vessel for their interactions.

denji's first scene in part 2 was of him inflicting harm from picking an arbitrary third option. his entire conflict is reliant on that being negative choice; his unwillingness to commit to something real and true.

it would work in harsh cooperation with the constant part 1 parallels littering part 2. death seems exactly the type of character to trace the work of her predecessors. deeply inspired, but unfit to make something truly her own.

fujimoto is literally making fun of yoru only ever making swords by having it backfire on her in a time of desperation.

my personal headcanon is that the nail fiend, who got a very flashy and focused introduction only to completely disappear from the narrative, is going to be part 2's "kobeni"; a character who formerly didn't interact with denji very much, but ended up giving integral input towards his development

a strong part of me genuinely believes that non-hetero sex is going to be a MAJOR plot point, especially for denji's arc. i can totally imagine fujimoto doing something like that.
