Birding at Oak Canyon Nature Center

A quiet morning at Oak Canyon Nature Center brought few birds but plenty of beauty. Thirteen species, one new lifer, easy trails, and a peaceful hike made the visit worthwhile despite a slow birding day.

Bird Nerd Project Results

The Bird Nerd Project for 2025 is officially complete. After photographing 170 species and learning more than I expected about fitness, photography, and birding, I’m already planning bigger goals for 2026 and beyond.

Finding my Thrid Place

After losing my old Starbucks “third place,” I’ve started exploring local coffee shops with my son. The surprise has been how welcoming these small cafés feel, and how much I’ve missed sitting down with a good cup of coffee.

A long dirt path cuts between water and stone, stretching toward a horizon caught beneath restless clouds. If feels like a place between worlds.

Be Still and Watch

Learning to slow down while birding is harder than I expected. A patient morning at Bolsa Chica finally paid off with a Marsh Wren and a Common Yellowthroat, small rewards on my path toward next year’s bigger goals.

Accidental Beauty

A cold day in Irvine brought family, chicken and waffles, and a little disappointing birding. Most photos were a bust, but one accidental shot of a bird lifting off a branch created a moment of unexpected beauty.

A Walk in the Park

A flooded park, hundreds of ducks and geese, and one bright vermilion flycatcher made for a quiet, satisfying morning of birding. No new species, but plenty of beauty, reflection, and the simple joy of retirement.

Rock Wren Surprise at Bolsa Chica

A surprise lifer at Bolsa Chica! With help from fellow birders, I photographed a Rock Wren up close. The encounter reminded me why I love birding: quiet solitude mixed with unexpected moments of connection.

Birding Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park

A young birder’s tip led me to a lifer: a Red-necked Phalarope. The joy of discovery quickly turned somber when I learned the bird had been taken by a kestrel later that day.

Crown Prince Kipper Snacks Review

A disappointing experiment with Crown Prince Kipper Snacks with a fishy flavor, odd texture, and an unappealing presentation. A one-time taste test that won’t make it into my tinned fish rotation.

Searching for the Common Gallinule

After six months of searching, I finally spotted the elusive common gallinule. Birding surprises like this are why I keep going, even when the birds I’m chasing don’t show. There’s always tomorrow.

Birding as a Path to Healing

Birding has become more than a hobby. It’s how I’m healing, physically and mentally. In quiet parks, among birds and sunrises, I’m rediscovering what peace feels like, one step and one photograph at a time.

Before the Lights: Backstage at a a high school dance recital, a group of young performers wait for their cue, caught between nerves and joy. A quiet instant of shared emotion before the lights, the music, and the movement begin.

Abstract iPhone Challenge – Day 2

I’ve kicked off a new creative challenge: 60 abstract iPhone photos, edited and shared one day at a time. Day 2 didn’t go as planned, but that’s the point, learn from the duds and keep moving.

Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Quotes

Words have shaped my journey as much as music ever did. From Emerson to Asimov, these ten quotes have kept me grounded, curious, and occasionally amused while reminding me what it means to live truthfully and fully.

Becoming a Clippers Fan at the Intuit Dome

My first Clippers game at the Intuit Dome turned out to be unforgettable. From luxury box seats to screaming from The Wall, I walked in a neutral and walked out a fan. The venue alone is worth the trip.

Woodpecker Number Five

I spotted my fifth woodpecker species of the year at Huntington Central Park, leveling up to what I’m calling “Woodpecker Level 2.” A productive morning of birding with my wife brought 35 species and a few surprises.

Wegovy Update: Week Three

Three weeks into my Wegovy journey, I’ve lost 8 pounds and seen improved glucose control with minimal side effects. The biggest challenge so far has been managing hunger spikes and rebuilding lost muscle, but overall, I’m making steady progress.

Four Woodpeckers and an Owl I Still Can’t Find

A year into birding, I’ve found four woodpecker species and zero owls. Spotting birds isn’t always easy, but with patience, a good spotter, and a little luck, I’ve made more progress than I ever expected.
