From the Arabian Nights to a 2010 horror movie. In “Red Sands,” a platoon of American soldiers find a statue in Afghanistan, and destroy it, which releases a demon who haunts them and finally possesses them and drives them mad. They kill one another one by one. 6/7

From Al-Tabari to the Arabian Nights. There are echoes in the story of the City of Brass (Lane tr., 3:507). The travelers meet a statue, in which is a genie (ifrit), who tells his story: he led the armies of “one of the Kings of the Sea” against King Solomon, who imprisoned him in a pillar. 5/7
