🆘 Help us find this little guy his forever home!

We found him shivering next to my car this weekend before the storms came in. He had trimmed nails & smelled like shampoo but isn’t chipped or neutered. He’s super sweet but there no room at the inn so we need your help in finding him a new home!

I have been hearing “Live to Tell” since I was a child — The Immaculate Collection, with its inferior-but-cohesive mixes, was a stalwart in my mom’s CD-changer. Yet for the two decades of my life it was a relatively minor fixture in my mental model of Madonna. When my fellow Madonna-heads at The Singles Jukebox ranked it 4th in our retrospective of her work (behind “Vogue,” “Hung Up,” and “Like a Prayer,” ahead of “Into The Groove”), I merely appreciated it as a stately downtempo number, a palate cleanser in between dancier numbers on True Blue. Somewhat embarrassingly, the thing that brought me into the fold here was not any moment of direct revelation but a work of criticism — Tom Breihan’s The Number Ones column in late 2020, to be exact. There, in a under-stimulating winter of seclusion, I rediscovered my love for thinking seriously about pop music via Breihan’s writing. In that column on “Live to Tell,” Breihan describes the song as “Planetarium music” — grand, spacey, imbued with a depth of wonder that defies the form of the 3-5 minute pop single. Where on her prior singles she embodied a certain insouciance, even when singing straight-ahead love songs, the Madonna of “Live to Tell” is more restrained, more willing to let the vast emptiness of the track just stand on its own. If the defining moment of “Like A Prayer” is the choir coming in, the defining moment of “Live to Tell” is the near-silence at the track’s midpoint: no vocals, no drums, just a few, far-off swooping synths. It’s that spareness that allows her to deliver her greatest vocal performance; when she reaches the bridge, her break from the mystification of the verse and chorus impacts upon me like a meteor. She’s not any more specific — her lyric is defined by the inability to just spit it out — but when she sings about not having “the strength to go very far” you can feel the world closing in on her, the understated anguish that envelops the song. A perfect psychodrama.
