Delighted to share that I received a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) designation from the IAPP today! It feels like just yesterday I was studying for my first IAPP certification as a rising 3L.

The Florida Attorney General filed a lawsuit alleging violations of the Florida Digital Bill of Rights. The prayer for relief includes civil penalties "up to $150,000 per violation," which is SIGNIFICANT.

The Utah Consumer Privacy Act's phantom "data minimization" requirement (it appeared in a prior draft, was taken out, but the enacted law left it in the section header) is the state privacy legislation equivalent of a Paper Town. Here it is popping up in a recent North Carolina bill:

Yesterday the Rhode Island Senate passed S2500, the Rhode Island Data Transparency & Privacy Protection Act, by a vote of 36-1. The House companion bill, HB 7787, passed the House 70-1 earlier this week. Both bills are now in cross-chamber. Read it here: webserver.rilegislature.gov/BillText/Bil...

The California Privacy Protection Agency has released the agenda for their January 12 board meeting. Absent from the agenda is updated draft regulations on risk assessments or automated decisionmaking technology access and opt out rights.
