For millions of Jews, it was purely *luck* that made the difference between them getting to be Americans and being Israelis.

This basically sums up my view on the relationship. It is borderline abusive in many respects.
Another Haaretz piece that I am struggling with, but this, in particular, just makes me feel like the "relationship" between Israel and the diaspora is — in the eyes of many Israelis — that the diaspora sends money while being dismissed as lesser Jews. Not healthy!

Do poets have to embody in their character a quality that compels people to pay attention to what they say? is how I’m thinking about it, which is wrong. Poets just have to write, and be judicious about what they share and with whom
My character strengths, as assessed by a simple web form I tried to answer seriously, and as proud of them as I am, are hardly the stuff of compelling literature.
