A busy year working to improve recognition and support for kinship families where children are raised by relatives and friends. Great to work with such a brilliant group of committed parliamentarians, providing the APPG's secretariat.
This week at our 2025 Annual General Meeting, members reflected on progress made over the last year & planned for the year ahead.

Thanks to MPs & Peers on @appgkinshipcare.bsky.social
for raising the challenges some kinship families are facing booking appointments for the children they are raising to receive crucial therapeutic support. Government must confirm funding ASAP.

The ambiguity around funding beyond March for the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund is leaving kinship families in limbo.

Last week the APPG's officers wrote to Children's Minister @janetdaby.bsky.social about ensuring children in kinship care can access essential therapeutic support.

Stark regional & local variations in % of children in care who are raised by family & friends (aka kinship foster carers).
This isn't okay.
All councils should be robustly exploring, including through the offer of a family group conference, whether a child can live safely in their family.
We’ve analysed new data on children raised with relatives & friends in kinship foster care in England.

16% of children in care are living with kinship foster carers. But that's only part of the story.

There's also lots of variation. From 32% in North Tyneside to 5% in Derby.
