I am sickened by the relentless demonisation of refugees.

No refugee underfunded a school.

No refugee closed a hospital.

No refugee took away support from the sick and disabled.

We need solutions not scapegoats. Stop blaming refugees and tax the rich instead!

So true in any profession. Hard work doesn't always equal success, and success isn't just because you worked hard. That doesn't mean you DIDN'T work hard, but it's not usually the deciding factor. I'm well aware of how much luck has had to do with all of the things I've achieved so far in my life.
Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.

People who use AI to make "art" and claim they truly are artists are the kids who would trace a picture of a giant squid from a book in year three and when they got caught out exclaim that everyone else is just jealous of their brilliant giant squid drawing.

This SoundCloud business has given me a newfound appreciation for all those annoying “we’re updating our terms of use” emails from random organisations

The rep for #SoundCloud says "licensed content" is prohibited from use, but @renderg.host makes the excellent point here about music *not* licensed by major labels - i.e. smaller artists.

The claim is no generative AI exists, but what about these tools? Opt out isn't enough, it should be opt in

We are moving more and more into a world where "AI training on your work" is becoming a condition to using platforms.

EGAIR rejects this premise in its entirety: AI rights should NOT be able to be assigned as a side-effect of using a service

This is so utterly disappointing. SoundCloud has always been a bastion for the unpublished (and many a published) artist. No more it seems 🤦‍♀️

There was a rather charming trend in the 1910s to introduce the actor at the beginning of the film by showing them first in their street or evening clothes and then dissolving into the costume of their characters. Here we see recent stage import William S. Hart become a bandit in THE BARGAIN (1914).

Attacking the rights of a marginalised group isn’t a win for feminism.

Demanding that women be defined by our biology isn't a win for feminism.

The people driving this are not acting in the interests of women. They're taking us all backwards and ushering in the far right.

No court in the world will convince me that trans women aren't women.

If you don't talk to the people you're making laws about, you don't understand the laws you're making.

Also, note the huge lack of talk about trans men. This isn't about anything other than bigotry, misogyny and fascism.
