Bit late to this one, but loving this beautifully spun novel on the effects of the crash on the inhabitants of a small town in Ireland. Superb for a debut. Highly recommend.

ust finished The Coast Road by Alan Murrin, his debut novel. Highly recommend checking it out. Story of three marriages, set in the village of Ardglas, County Donegal.

I hang memories from a length of string that spans my bedroom. At night I lay awake staring at them, some luminescent like Jamie's warm embrace, some soft like feet in warm sand with Paul. Others are resonant, chiming when caught by a draught, like lost love & unrequited love that hum a low E flat.
The 20 April word prompt for #mpotd (micro prompt of the day): STRING.

I wanted 'like tea lights in the mist', she insisted upon 'like fireflies in the fog'. I wanted emotion, she typed more sensory detail. 'It's my name on the cover' I said. 'They're my words on the page' she snorted. If only I had the time to put my own words down, I'm a ghost in this rotten process.
The 18 Feb word prompt for #mpotd (micro prompt of the day): GHOST.

My favourite end to a film.
The Third Man. Joseph Cotton leans against a cart smoking and waiting, as Alida Valli walks slowly toward the camera, through the cemetery, and straight past him, without a word being said. Class.

Just listened to this podcast. Not only George Sanders take on the skill of Claire Keegan, but herself reading the utterly brilliant 'So Late in the Day'. Well worth a listen.

The ups and downs of writing. Just had a good hour, getting 1,000 odd words down, feeling my way into a short story. Read it through, made a few tweaks, confident to go on tomorrow.
My phone pings....an email....'we enjoyed your submission but on this occasion.....' So it goes.

I'm early tonight, I've a choice. On a bench by a stout oak, I lay double cardboard, Kellogg's Cornflakes, my St Mungo's blanket from last Christmas, then me wrapped in a Crisis thermal sleeping bag. Finally Marathon silver foil I found on the Mall & Sanyo tv cardboard. A hood keeps out the light.

Everyone starts somewhere - a kick of a ball, a stroke of paint, a sizzle of onion. Me? With cardboard, gaffer tape & a wooden pallet. Maria bound my hands, Joe checked the binding. Louisa taped up the box, using the entire roll. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... ... ..
Such was my entry into the world of telesales.

As the wheels lock up and squeal, Johnny drops his peach. Rotating colours of orange, yellow and blush, moments of juice spray from the bite mark, on a parabolic path to warm tarmac - the fruit explodes. With torn flesh and a splatter of sap, the stone is exposed.

The bearded one spoke, "Gentlemen, I believe we've reached a decision. Are you agreed?" One by one the three solemnly nodded. The youngest gathered papers together, the baldest lit a cigarette. Three days of deliberation, two bottles of whiskey, several arguments had led them to this. Thai food.

"Did you tell him to come and pick us up?" Big Sam asks.
"I don't understand what's gone wrong." Joel remembers forgetting. Snow chews up his suede shoes, the north wind bites his ears. He's a boy again, outside school, waiting for a mother who'd forgotten her vow of abstinence.
Another walk home.

That new girl faffed with me hair like she'd lost her contact lens in it. If I'm not me usual conker I'll play merry 'ell. Ma tea's not turned up, & this vinyl chair, well - I'm stuck to it like Velcro. Chantelle, the stylist, she's outside dragging on a Capstan like it's life support. I ask you.

I know this corridor well - stained green carpet, kid's work hung on the walls at jaunty angles, the stink of moulded sandwiches leaching from forgotten lockers. I'm labelled, I've barely sat at a desk before I'm thrown out. Sod them. Outside I scale the fence, light up and read.

I've been gorging myself on Claire Keegan recently. How I've not read any of her work until now amazes me. Every sentence is a jewel - makes me feel somewhat unworthy but hugely inspired. 🥰
