Sound UP for the squeak of a two-day old baby sea otter! These little potatoes are almost helpless for months, while mom takes care of their every need. 🦑

Baby orca mini breach! 🦑

Mola Mola! They come to the surface to warm up and/or attract birds to eat parasites off of them. 🦑

Today we saw a group of Humpbacks aggressively disrupt the hunt of a pod of transient Orcas. The seagulls appeared to be cleaning up floating sea lion bits, so the Humpbacks were probably too late to fully effectuate any altruistic tendencies, but they tried. 🦑

My wife took this video of a boisterous bottlenose dolphin in Monterey Bay, CA. At the very end this lunatic breached parallel to the boat and actually brushed against my wife’s shoulder on the way back down. At that moment, it had to be at 10-12 feet in the air. A super rare encounter! 🦑

Whales are the coolest marine mammal, but sea lions are fun too. It almost looks like the gull in the corner gets a friendly nudge from one. 🦑

Humpback whales in feeding mode will follow the anchovies wherever they go… including right under the boat! 🦑

I wish more people in this country understood how much better it is to enjoy other people’s cultures instead of fearing them. Our diversity makes us strong!

Five humpbacks lunge feed in unison. This is not the famous “bubble net” feeding behavior practiced by another population, but they’re definitely working together. 🦑

Super close-up lunge feed! I had never been close enough to one of these to see all the wiggling and jiggling of the throat pleats.🦑

When humpback whales spend time close to the boat, they behave with such gentleness that their awareness of their own power and their conscious effort not to impact us is obvious. It reminds me of pet videos where an enormous dog plays delicately with an infant. 🦑

Oh, hello! 🦑

The friendly humpback is a peak whale watching experience. It’s amazing to get this close to these magnificent creatures. 🦑

The humpback whale’s range of surface behaviors make them so much fun to watch. Here’s a perennial crowd-pleaser, the upside down double pectoral fin slap. 🦑

Baby humpback breaches are pure joy. 🦑

A momma otter lovingly rubs her 1-2 week old pup. There are only about 3,000 southern sea otters in the world.🦑

Go out and make a splash today! 🦑

Pelicans normally pop into the air quite readily, but this guy was so full of anchovies that he needed a lot more runway. 🦑

Come for the rarely-seen spectacle of a humpback lunge feeding a stone’s throw from the beach. Stay for the exasperated fisherman who was ready to accept the sooty shearwater feeding frenzy, but now wonders if maybe it’s time to just go home. 🦑

A mother and calf pair of humpbacks lunge feed on anchovies. In this location, the mother whale was longer than the water was deep! But the anchovies were so thick they were darkening whole swaths of ocean, so it was probably worth the trip for these two. 🦑
