Noone mentioned The Exorcist? These movies are different kinds of scarey, The Shining is truly unsettling, The Thing is graphically grotesque and psychologically unnerving as it forces you to think who to trust, whilst The Exorcist is incredibly shocking and disgusting, its horrifically exhausting.

Ive always seen the way the one ring affects people, especially gollum, but others like Bilbo as well, as a direct parallel to addiction, its not subtle, its very powerfully done. What has more finesse is Frodo's hope that the addiction to the ring can be overcome and its bearers can be healed.
