As #SouthKorea debates developing its own nuclear weapon, there's a group of #Koreans who know the horrors of nuclear war firsthand. For South Korea's 원폭치해자 (atomic bomb victims) nuclear weapons represent a painful history. My latest for @thediplomat.com thediplomat.com/2025/06/kore... #Korea

After a century of expansion of press rights in the United States, the country is experiencing its first significant and prolonged decline in #PressFreedom in modern history, and Trump’s return to the presidency is greatly exacerbating the situation. rsf.org/en/country/u...

I saw #Blondie in concert just one time (Aug 7, 1982). They closed the set with the Rolling Stones Start Me Up. At the end of the show drummer Clem Burke kicked over his drum kit and yelled, "this is for Keith Moon."

The way to address difficult, painful history is not to hide it or erase it, but to face it squarely with an open mind and learn from it. Smaller minds must not prevail:

Last week parliamentarians from around the world (🇯🇵🇩🇪🇳🇴🇫🇷🇮🇹🇧🇪🇱🇺🇵🇫🇨🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇦🇹+) met at the UN to discuss the need to universalize the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Their presence reflects the growing recognition that the threat of nuclear war is rising, posing an existential risk to humanity.

This is #nuclearban week in New York when people are gathering from around the world to discuss and advance the TPNW (Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons). I’m here to learn more about the growing number of nations that have signed (94) and ratified (73) the treaty that bans the bomb.

I took this photo one month ago today, the spot where today Jimmy Carter lies in state. America of the past is gone and an uncertain American age is about to begin. It’s hard not to feel sad that this the path Americans have chosen.
