My first academic publication on sports analytics just dropped! Ulrik Brandes and I investigated the legend that two-goal leads are the most dangerous in soccer.

Beware the Two-Goal Lead: The Truth Behind the Legend of the Most Dangerous Lead in Soccer
Contrary to common sense, two-goal leads are often said to the be the most dangerous in soccer. Legend has it that once teams go up by two they become complacent, making it all too likely that thei...

Does socialism mean giving up on exceptionalness? A great piece on youth hockey, of all things, says no. Minnesota hockey is still largely a public good; in Mass. it's a capitalist fever dream. Yet Minn. produces more D1 players these days, Massachusetts fewer. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/03/05/s...
Massachusetts is losing the battle of the ‘State of Hockey’ to Minnesota. What’s working there? - The Boston Globe
For Minnesota to keep churning out high-level boys’ hockey players, it’s essential to have children as young as five able to access the sport. It starts with the rinks.

Night of the 10,000m PBs (or similar) at the renovated White Stadium in Boston. Good idea or great idea?

Nice to see some Dallas Cowboys fans and media here. I see there is some concern about whether tanking (ie playing to the best of our ability) will be enough to get a top pick. Here's what I got from 100K sims and a basic Elo model. If we lose out, top 3 is very likely, probably pick 2.

Tracking app has Scott Fauble as a DNF. Tough luck, once again, for someone who has inspired so many of us.

Oh no, Faubs is somehow 20 some seconds back at 8M. What happened?

Olympic Trials Marathon thread! Still a few hours to wait, so here are my predictions. First, the men:

🥇Scott Fauble. Boston and NYC still draw the best US marathoners, and Faubs hasn’t lost to an American at either since leaving NAZ. He’s got as much talent as anyone and has a big mental edge.

Fun with data scraped from the US Olympic Trials athlete bios. First, hometowns. You can see the influence of growing up near a major marathon or, well, in Minnesota. 5 athletes list Kenyan hometowns and Eritrea, Tigray, Zimbabwe, and Germany are home to one athlete each.

Kelvin Kiptum. Sifan Hassan. And a Molly Seidel PR for good measure. What a great day in Chicago. See you there next year?

Do people here do running shoe reviews? I’ve got 500km on the Puma Deviate 2 so here are some thoughts. Very comfy, fairly snappy, A+ outsole, great value and durability. I like them for long and easy runs, but you could definitely race a marathon or half if you don’t want to spend on super shoes.

why haven't I seen anyone point out that each of the African countries that advanced to the Women's World Cup knockout stage will have to play its former colonizer?! Morocco v France, Nigeria v England, South Africa v Netherlands… exciting times, give 'em hell Africa

I had Germany as the prematch favorite to win the whole thing. But even 16 added minutes couldn’t get them through. And to think, people (like me) thought the expanded tournament would make for boring groups.

Only minutes after equalizing against Korea, Germany is now back on the brink of elimination with Morocco’s penalty-rebound goal against Colombia.
