Dunphy's one of three councilors who represent East Portland - and some of the deadliest streets in our city.

So far he's the only one who's spoken out about the three traffic deaths that happened in separate crashes on October 29th.

Have a listen!! (or read a few excerpts)

I'm interviewing Councilor Dunphy about this today to see how/if/what he's done in terms of following up after this powerful statement.
Three of my neighbors in district 1 were killed in three separate car collisions last night. We need action now to reduce pedestrian and cyclist deaths.

YOU need to do more to improve your own driving. Do better. Keep your neighbors alive.

another one of those stories where I started typing up a straight news story but then got more mad and opinionated as it went on and didn't hold back much 🤣
"Maybe the OTC and Oregon lawmakers will wake up and take our state's approach to transportation in a very different direction — one that stops chasing freeway expansion megaprojects as a solution to climate change (which is what Strickler believed them to be)..."

ODOT turmoil continues as director signals his exit
Maybe Strickler just got tired of not winning.

Makes more sense to me now why OTC removed I-5 Rose Quarter funding agenda from today's OTC meeting. It would have been very awkward to have a candid conversation about the abject failure and possible end of that project the day after Strickler announced his departure.
Hearing that ODOT Director Kris Strickler is stepping down effective Jan 2. (!!).

Portland's big xmas tree arrives in Pioneer Square today.

I've long had a dream of doing a cargo bike convoy from Portland to nearby forests where we cut down a tree and then haul it back to town, 100% by bike. I think we could pull it off! Wouldn't that be cooler than a massive big-rig?

Meet, greet... and eat!

As per tradition, at 4:00 pm I buy lots of yummy snacks for everyone, which at Migration means sweet/savory plantains (Nicaraguan "maduros/tostones"), yucca fries, and other good stuff from their food partner Papas Fritas.
TODAY!

@sgoodyear.bsky.social + @brooklynspoke.bsky.social of @thewaroncars.bsky.social will talk w @jonathanmaus.bsky.social about Life After Cars

Show up early to meet & greet!
This dynamic duo is on a national media tour talking up their excellent new book that diagnoses, dissects, and debates how car-dominated places have negatively influenced our lives — and what we'd gain by living life without (or a lot fewer of) them.

This will ignite conversations about the old plan to make a rail-trail next to this hwy and some folks are already talking about how this underscores the need for a more reliable bike route in this area when River View cemetery road is closed.

If anyone has more info on this, pls let me know. It’s a MultCo Sheriff case (not PPB).

This will be a fun fight.
A citizen ballot initiative backed by the Portland Police Association will seek to reroute 25% of revenues from the Portland Clean Energy Fund tax to fund the hiring of 400 additional police officers.

Reader just sent me this photo.

Given that rolling coal (where these truck owners modify their tailpipes to emit a huge plume of black smoke on any target they choose) is a federal offense, I hope this person gets pulled over.

Sure is interesting to me how Portland Police issue a careless driving citation at the scene of a crash when it involves one of their own. I'm always told they can't do this until investigation closes, and in many cases (involving bike riders), police just leave it to insurance to figure out.

I realize why someone who's a CEO of a car wash feels threatened by this project, but if Tarlow is going to take the extraordinary step of becoming an outspoken critic of it, the least he can do is come up with a factual, good-faith argument against it.

Debunking a CEO's opposition to bus lanes on 82nd Avenue
If a CEO is this committed to their opposition, we should look more closely at their argument.

Police just shared the name of one of the three people killed in separate traffic crashes in Hazelwood N'hood on October 28th. His name was Don Edney, a 59 year old man who was in a wheelchair when he was hit. Look at all the people who showed up for a celebration of his life at a local church. ❤️‍🩹

Damn. Never realized that Oregon fatal crashes are so closely tied to VMT. This is one reason why it's so vital that we make buses and bikeways as good as possible and do everything we can w land use & housing to lower our VMT. Drive more, die more. Drive less, die less. It's that simple.

Wow! Might need to do a reporting trip to Minneapolis. Portland could use more of what they’re doing.
New bikeways that have opened (or are very close to opening) in Minneapolis this year:

- Hennepin Avenue S
- University Avenue SE
- 24th Street E
- 1st Avenue S

"The proposal is that two entire lanes of 82nd - northbound and southbound - will be closed to motor vehicles, and the bus lanes will take their place..." - David Tarlow, CFO Washman Carwash

Umm. Mr. Tarlow that's not even how the bus lanes would work! "Business access" is in the name. jeezus.

Another round of virtual office hours done. Had 4 folks sign up today: a BP subscriber who just wanted to chat and touch base, an ex-ODOT staffer now at different DOT asking for advice, a recently carfree person looking to get plugged into activism, and someone w a cool project pitching a story. !
