Tangerine Dream - Rubycon (1975)
This soaring ambient classic from Germany vaporized me with its mystical, murky grandeur, diffusing me into the molten cosmos. Gloomy, fluting mellotron echoes warble among simmering synths, dreamy piano, and majestic choirs. A perfect vortex of sound.

Korni Grupa - S/T (1972)
Epic welcome to the vast world of ex-Yugoslavia prog. Fitting, as it was one of the first rock albums to ever release there. Masterful exhibition of ethnic Serbian instrumentation & melodies—fusing jazz, blues, & psychedelia to a frenetic yet tasteful triumph.

2Pac - All Eyez On Me (1996)
His last album before his murder, this is my intro to him. No wonder it’s deemed one of the greatest of all time. Exceptional angry & ruminative lyrics over G-funk, from the West Coast gangsta-poet / activist who transcended art into being a revolutionary 🔥

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971)
I felt my skin crawl to this historic, Lolita-esque French album. Sultry, funky bass urges on scattered swells of lavish guitar & orchestration. Serge’s half-spoken croon intoxicates you to the dark depths of his narrator’s deviancy.

Third Eye Blind - S/T (1997)
These guys rule. A perfect alt-rock album w/ touches of 90’s post-grunge & early pop-punk, underrated in the same way as Jimmy Eat World. The singles are eternal, deep cuts somehow even better. Feels like a wistful adolescent summer, biking under blue skies.

Prince - Purple Rain (1984)
I know I’m extremely late to Prince. Funny how, with some albums, culture rewrites what was once avant-garde into foundational text. I think I need to listen to this again. A genre-less beam of flaming dark light, an undefinable catharsis of primal euphoria ☔️

Hapa - Hapa (1992)
Some albums are so full of unexpected light, they enrich & lift you above the clouds. This is one, a serene psych-folk voyage that weaves oceanic guitar experimentation w/ traditional Hawaiian folk music, sung in the islands’ native language. Warm, vibrant, inspiring.

50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2003)
A cultural touchstone of the early 2000’s & a great gangsta-rap album—& an underdog story—released against all odds to incredible success. 50’s flow bounces menacingly & melodically over classic-sounding Dr. Dre production. Still sounds fresh! 🔥

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (2022)
I loved most of this sprawling, versatile, and ambitious alt-country / indie-americana double album from a few years ago. Manages to feel grounded and sincere, while a sense of grand adventure prevails on the full band songs.

Esthero - Breath from Another (1998)
Adored this sublime trip-hop / downtempo album, eerie and sensual—maybe the best I’ve ever heard in this genre. Esthero’s voice reminds me a little of Björk’s, warm and soothing over dark, sumptuous jazz and moody electronic textures.

Prefab Sprout - Jordan: The Comeback (1990)
I had no idea what to expect going in, and some of this is initially too conceptual for me, but this lush, dynamic, swirling fantasy of a British art-pop album eventually won me over. An ambitious, quirky sound-bath of synth-laden anthems ✨

Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (1993)
A confident, raunchy, and vulnerable indie-rock staple from the 90’s, a precursor who paved the way for artists like Courtney Barnett, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast, etc. Great “lo-fi” rock album of great tunes.

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967)
Blazing a path to the future by one of the greatest vocalists ever, this timeless album was Aretha’s breakout & transformed pop music forever. A defining masterwork of brassy, brilliant gospel-tinged soul & swooning r&b.

Karibe con K - Amos del Futuro (1990)
A blast of warm air from this massive band from Uruguay. I generally prefer my cumbia to be psychedelic moreso than tropical, but this is undeniable and infectious. Caribbean-style horns among impressive piano and drum solos demand you to dance.

Shakti - Natural Elements (1977)
I’m a beginner w/ Indian music, but this serves as a great intro & blend of western & eastern influences—an enchanting acoustic mindbender of indo-prog/raga rock. Comes barreling in at high-speed, ends in nirvana. Pure, mesmerizing, unreal musicianship 🪷

Sunn O))) - Black One (2005)
An absurd, entrancing peace lingers behind the doom-laden veil of this hellish drone-metal album, as certain solace comes with the darkest of desolation. Here, a glass heart bleeds relief among the echoing subterranean wails and shimmering, smoky thunder.

Sweet Trip - Velocity: Design: Comfort (2003)
Glitchy, ethereal, experimental indie-pop album—a hybrid of IDM & shoegaze sounds. Chockfull of whooshes, bleeps, & bloops. Gives a similar vibe to early Baths, a little bit of Stereolab mixed with MBV. Definitely worth multiple listens! ⚡️

Jun Fukamachi (21st Century Band) - Rokuyu (1975)
A mindblower of Japanese jazz-fusion & prog-rock that I don’t have much to say about besides, “Holy crap!” Breathtaking musicianship throughout, defying all genre boundaries & conventions to form an entirely unique spacey, groovy opus.

Sleepy’s Theme - The Vinyl Room (1998)
Frequent Outkast collaborator Sleepy Brown delivers a knockout album of silky & sexy Blaxploitation-style jams, rich with drowsy horns, keyboards, & funkalicious wah-wah guitar. A goldmine of vintage, laidback Dirty South vibes. Highly recommend! 🔥

Rufus & Chaka Khan - Ask Rufus (1977)
Thoughtful and subdued soul-funk album, yet bursting at the seams with starry-eyed emotion and mystery. Chaka’s powerhouse vocals are flawless, reigning over Rufus’ sophisticated, jazzy instrumentation. Seems perfect for a late-night drive.

Piglet - Lava Land (2005)
A classic instrumental math-rock album that washes over you as much as it challenges you. Intense and technically complex with extremely precise guitar and muscular drumming. Sporadic yet organized, but it didn’t leave much of a lasting impression on me TBH.

Dan Fogelberg - Nether Lands (1977)
Only familiar w/ The Innocent Age, this is just as graceful. Sweeping orchestral arrangements caress Fogelberg’s tender, luminous vocals on this earnest & impassioned folk album. A nourishing listen for fans of Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, & the like.
