LOL! But that brings us outside the original question; you can't redirect to /dev/null if it doesn't exist.

No, if no-one can observe a side effect, it doesn't exist!

Careful there, you may have just revealed my secret disability! 🤪

On a more serious note, glad to hear people are thinking about this!

Yes, this is exactly the situation I was in. The solution @amyko.phd referenced seems ideal here:

The latest best practices are either captions on the far periphery for DHH audience members, or a captioning link so someone can view on their own device.

That sounds great, it would totally resolve my issue without compromising accessibility for others! Thanks for sharing.

I recognize that a serious distraction for me is much less severe than someone with hearing problems who can't hear a talk at all. If there's a hard of hearing person in attendance, I'll gladly make the sacrifice for their benefit.

But let's not pretend there's no tradeoff!

I attended a talk today & the live captions were incredibly distracting. I had a very difficult time focusing on the talk because the words were constantly appearing and my eye was drawn to them. I wonder how disability researchers think about this?

Arguably it's worse to promise people a democracy and then steal the vote, than to not promise it at all. But obviously one would hope to pressure all countries to move in a democratic direction.

Just musing, I wonder if there's a case to be made for something like the UN, but made up exclusively of democracies. And without any country getting a veto. It could do a lot more than the UN does for protecting democracy worldwide.
November 5, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Yeah, there's a ton of reason to suspect Trump's motives here. The UN would have more credibility in any case, but especially now. Unfortunately the UN is structured in a way that prevents it from doing anything most of the time.

Absolutely a fair point about the history. OTOH I am not sure I fully agree that "coups do not work." Some make things worse, others improve things. It depends a great deal on who the coup was against, who did the coup, and what their intentions were. Elections are better, but were subverted here.

It's probably a violation of international law for the US to depose Maduro--but should international law be respected if it props up a dictator who stole an election?
