It's worse than that: because populism can't deliver its promises, it has to keep finding new traitors & enemies to blame. It has to keep tearing at the walls of its imagined prison.

The more it fails, the more it turns people against each other. And the more it seeks to destroy anything in its way
I really don't want to go through the whole rigmarole of seeing Farage win power and then fuck everything up and have loads of sympathetic voxpops with dismayed Reform voters expressing their regrets when it was extremely fucking obvious what would happen because his platform is incoherent garbage

Clearly, shame is not enough to stop water companies discharging filth into our rivers & paying our bill money to shareholders. The EA & Ofwat need to enforce the law. Hard to see how this will happen when the government has just cut their funding.

Make sure you send in your views on why this is great but needs toughening further - you can be sure that the grouse moor owners & their lobbyists will be trying to weaken it! -

Yorkshire Water to pay £40m for sewage dumping.

Company has history of criminal convictions.

Fine will be used to upgrade infrastructure, clean rivers.

So company won't have to spend, but will own the resulting infrastructure.

There is no penalty?
Yorkshire Water to pay £40m for sewage overflow failures
An agreement with the regulator forces the company to spend the bulk of the money on sewage spill prevention while a local river partnership also gets cash to enable improvement work.

As shocking as this is, it’s also likely that the regime won’t work either for Trump, nor Musk, who will each feel threatened by each other and try to fight it out between them. They will already know that. I’ve little idea where that may leave the world.
An absolute must-read from the great @carolecadwalla.bsky.social (who broke the Cambridge Analytica story) about the combined threat of Musk and Trump to the free press.

Any journalist who thinks currying favor with this regime will work for you: think again.
