Arguments are being filed in a Supreme Court case that could force ISPs to shut off Internet connections for the mere allegation a user is engaging in copyright infringement by sharing or downloading songs.

Cox argues an adverse ruling would "yield mass evictions from the internet."
If allowed to stand, the Fourth Circuit’s one-two punch will yield mass evictions from the internet. ISPs confronting steep penalties will have no choice but to terminate the connections of homes, barracks, hospitals, and hotels, upon bare accusation. The ramifications extend beyond copyright infringement: Under the Fourth Circuit’s reasoning, once an aggrieved party sends an ISP a notice asserting any manner of customer wrongdoing, the ISP is a willful accomplice for every subsequent customer misdeed. That notion turns internet providers into internet police and jeopardizes internet access for millions of users.

2) Age assurance and default tools and/or settings for account holders By no later than 6 months after this Code comes into effect and where technically feasible and reasonably practicable, a provider of an internet search engine service must:     a) implement appropriate age assurance measures for account holders; and     b) apply tools and/or settings, like ‘safe search’ functionality, at the highest safety setting by default for an account holder its age assurance systems indicate is likely to be an Australian child, designed to protect and prevent Australian children from accessing or being exposed to online pornography and high impact violence material in search results. At a minimum, such tools and settings must filter out online pornography and high-impact violence material detected in search results. Note: Internet search engine services are designed for general public use, with or without an account. Providers of internet search engine services are not required to implement age assurance measures for end-users who are not account holders.

Is it just me, or do the Musk/X-negotiated "free speech protections" for the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) have an uncanny parallel to the Russian-led UN cybercrime treaty?
KOSA snippet: "Nothing in this section shall be construed to allow a government entity to enforce subsection (a) based upon the viewpoint of users expressed or through any speech, expression, or information protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States." UN cybercrime free speech and human rights section: "Nothing in this Convention shall be interpreted as permitting suppression of human rights or fundamental freedoms, including the rights related to the freedoms of expression, conscience, opinion, religion or belief, peaceful assembly and association, in accordance and in a manner consistent with applicable international human rights law."

Speaker Johnson wants a win for Trump on KOSA. From a news conference today:

"We are very optimistic that if it's not done this year, that we can do that early next year with our Republican majorities because it's the Republican party that has been working aggressively to protect children online."
“Yeah, it's a really important issue. As a parent, I'm very passionate about protecting children online. As a professional, as a lawyer, in my career as a legislator, I've made this a big part of my work. My life's commitment is to protect children. And we've been doing that. We have to take some initiative on this. There's been some great work done on KOSA. As you know, there's still some concern about the free speech and whether it might lead to further censorship by the government of valid conservative voices, for example. So, we're working through all that. I'm grateful for the hard work that's been done. I'm grateful for the support behind it. I certainly I think all of us, 100% of us, support the principle behind it. But you’ve got to get this one right. When you're dealing with the regulation of free speech, you can't go too far and have it be overbroad, but you want to achieve those objectives. So, it's essential that we get this issue right. We are very optimistic that if it's not done this year, that we can do that early next year with our Republican majorities because it's the Republican party that has been working aggressively to protect children online. We lead on this and will continue to lead on.”
