Arguments are being filed in a Supreme Court case that could force ISPs to shut off Internet connections for the mere allegation a user is engaging in copyright infringement by sharing or downloading songs.

Cox argues an adverse ruling would "yield mass evictions from the internet."

Search engines like Google and Microsoft must be in compliance by December 27, 2025.

Here's a screenshot of those eSafety Commissioner age assurance rules (alt text also available).

Thanks to the UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement for a great conversation!

🎙️ We covered the TikTok saga, changes at Meta, why online safety matters for free expression, and more on the "SpeechMatters" podcast.

Wow! It's been 10 years since my first State of the Net conference. Mainly in the control room.

🌐⛓️ It was the dawn of blockchain and the sharing economy.

🛜 The FTC launched an IoT safety and security report.

😤 People argued about net neutrality.

🚨 Shocker: The TikTok ban won't actually protect people.

Explicitly Chinese apps are topping the Google Play and Apple App Store top charts along with a "free speech alternative" that banned TikTok users flocked to.

The House floor erupts into applause. The spending bill has passed. The Senate is expected to pass it soon and President Biden plans to sign it into law.

They have the votes!

And still coming in... the CR will pass the House.
December 20, 2024 at 10:53 PM
Democrats seem to be waiting this one out. I expect they might be doing some math behind the scenes on how many votes are actually needed to pass the CR.

They need a 2/3 majority under "suspension"

*Applause* as the debate ends and the House vote begins.

We've got a Christmas poem on the House floor... just pass the damn bill! 🎄🏛️

"Twas five days before Christmas and all through this House
Not a lawmaker was resting, not even their spouse.
The CR was stalled. The debates full of heat.
While a shutdown shadow loomed over our streets."

Speaker Johnson wants a win for Trump on KOSA. From a news conference today:

"We are very optimistic that if it's not done this year, that we can do that early next year with our Republican majorities because it's the Republican party that has been working aggressively to protect children online."
