My favorite coffee shop in Durham is super dog friendly and today all of the dogs are in costumes because they’re doing a free Halloween pet photo shoot. I am in heaven.

That one time your grad students surprised you at the Wolfpack Pictures screening by having everyone dress up as "bald" characters, but they didn't tell you because you're already a bald character.
My graduate students dressed up as various bald characters at the most recent Wolfpack Pictures screening. I am being directly represented (mocked? admired? having my copyright infringed?) by @prankorigami.bsky.social, who mirrors my peace sign and correctly clocks me by wearing a plaid shirt and a hat, but incorrectly clocks me by wearing shorts and sandals (although admittedly I am probably the English professor most likely to wear shorts to a class).

Normally I hate writing my bio when I’m asked to do so for an event, but today as I listed projects that I’m worked on, it made me feel lucky to be able to do the kind of research/writing I do.
A bio that reads, “Dr. John Paul Stadler is an assistant professor of Film and Media Studies at North Carolina State University, with cross-appointments in the Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media program and the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies program. His research and teaching centers on the role of media in shaping modern notions of gender and sexuality. His research has covered the complex desire structure of gay-for-pay pornography, the rise of phone sex during the AIDS epidemic, the relationship of porn studies as a discursive field to queer studies, and the epidemiological lessons of the porn industry for the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, he is writing on the modern fetish of gooning, the gamification of porn in "Cock Hero" videos, and the psychogeography of space in the first AIDS film, Buddies.”

Mmm, the coffee shop was offering free queer tarot card readings, and this one really resonated!

My friend Bennett had a birthday party with a collage station to make a custom cards. Consequently, I discovered I like collaging yesterday! Also, all parties should have a collage station.
The front of my collaged card features Bennett’s photographic head decoupaged on top of the body of a child’s torso. The torso has a shirt that reads “Handle with care.” Behind Bennett are two white blood cells derived from an elementary school book of illustrated science lessons. The word “Swag!” appears in honor of Justin Bieber’s new album. Behind all of this are pink radiating lines. The interior of the card features several elements: an advertisement for skin care; a woman performing CPR on a dummy, turquoise geometric tiles, seaweed, an illustrated woman with a severe black bob and her tongue out, the same illustrated woman’s chin extending our impossibly from a different location, two more white blood cells, one of which has the face of a boy attached to it and an arm extending out, holding a pretzel, and the headline “We offer the skills you need.”

I’m doing this thing where I insert CATS (2019) into every one of my Intro to Film lectures. Name that classic film!
