The development of gold working coincided with the rise of the Moche lords. In the Moche culture the "Lords" acting as high-ranking political and religious leaders who ruled over cities like Moche and Sipán, overseeing the construction of impressive pyramids and temples, farming and trade systems.

Gold was associated with the sun and the divine, often crafted into intricate jewelry, masks, and sacred objects for rulers and gods.

Silver, often linked to the moon, was similarly used for ceremonial items and ornaments.

In Moche art depicted here, Ai Apaec is shown in pottery and metalwork, where his image is sometimes linked to themes of transformation or duality, with representations of both human and animal forms.

He is commonly associated with warfare, creation, and fertility, and sometimes described as a decapitator or a god of sacrifice. Ai Apaec was typically represented with fierce features, including a fanged mouth, large eyes, and sometimes a headdress made of feathers.

Ai Apaec is one of the heroes in Moche religion, often depicted as a powerful figure with both human, animalistic, and supernatural traits. He is said to have performed numerous feats on earth and, like many heroes in other cultures, he also does, descends into the underworld and is reborn.

When one of the combatants knocked the opposition's helmet off and grabbed his hair, the battle would be over and the loser would become a prisoner and often sacrificed .

In art of the Moche culture, warriors are often observed facing off in man to man ritualistic combat.

Each man fought to honour his community and were a symbolic form of an encounter between opposing yet complementary entities which led to regeneration and the start of a new cycle .

The ceramic vessels photographed here, express three basic notions of Andean thought: the existence of opposite and complementary forces, constant regeneration, and the existence of the upper world and underworld and their constant interaction.

In the Andean Worldview, the world above was in constant communication with the world below. These objects were not designed for everyday use. Rather they served a necessary spiritual function, containing drinks and other substances that were needed in rituals and funerary offerings.

One of my favourite parts of the Ramses exhibition was the Uraeus. It belonged to the 12th dynasty king Senusret II (1897-1878BC).

On the 13th of October in AD 54 Emperor Claudius died. It was reported that his death was caused by a poisoned mushroom, given to him by his fourth wife/niece Agrippina Minor.
He was made a god after his death.
