"It is all too easy to see ourselves as fighting on God's side, to identify our ideology with what is best for the world and use it to justify crusades, pogroms or preemptive attacks. Projecting evil onto the world makes me unassailable right-a position as dangerous in politics as a marriage."-intro

Bill Clinton was the most powerful man in the world, and Monica Lewinsky was an intern and his subordinate, and in any other workplace that would be called sexual harassment, and if you don't take power dynamics into account when you talk about things like this, you don't actually understand consent

Speaking as someone who was raised in conservative Evangelical spaces, I believe that some folks have drifted so far to the right in their theology that they mistake historic orthodox doctrine in the middle for far left and liberal.

Agreed!
I suggest replacing with these metrics:

"Strangers welcomed"
"Sick visited"
"Hungry fed"

Wonder if we would still be able to claim revival?
these metrics are not meaningfully connected to the claim

Christian Nationalism says: "God and country."

We say: "God and humanity."

Christian Nationalism says: "America first."

We say: "The Kingdom of God on Earth first."

"The pursuit of certainty is a trap. The more we try to eliminate doubt, the more it will ensnare us, and the more we seek certainty, the more it will elude us. But the more we embrace mystery, the more beauty our souls will encounter."

If your response to someone pointing out that your guy is bad, is to point out that their guy is bad, then your guy is still bad.

I think Christian Nationalism has been enabled by the ease at which we (myself included) have made it to become a Christian in Evangelicalism. We've preached things like "one simple act of faith," or "a free gift," but I've come to understand it's much more than that...

A current example of the gospel being disembodied b/c of Platonic Dualism is when Christians send Missionaries overseas, but then also vote for people who remove humanitarian aid from the same countries because of the belief that food and medicine have nothing to do with salvation or the gospel.

No disrespect meant, but I'm very curious..
I've seen several videos this Monday morning of pastors who filmed themselves after service saying they're so excited about what God is doing at their Church. Then they show film of the stage, the musicians, lots of people in the audience...

To respectfully call out inconsistencies between what we say we believe and what we do - and then to warn of the possible destructive consequences - is the sacred work of a prophet.

Sadly, this work is often denigrated as "negative" and countered with "your shoulds" rather than being appreciated.

As a dad of three PKs who are now adults, if I could go back in time and change my response to questions like "Dad, how do I know God is real?"
I would not use apologetics and try to convince them, I would instead validate their doubts and encourage them to seek wisdom rather than certianty.

If we try to bring about the Kingdom of God through the state, we will always find ourselves in an adulterous relationship with the powers and principalities of this world. We will accumulate a debt for which we will need to sell our souls in order to pay.

Follower of Jesus: We were never meant to be in power or to have political influence. We are instead called out to live in subversion to the powers and principalities of this world, working to care for the poor, widow immigrant, and weak.

Blessed are the peacemakers.

God sees.

As a builder, I know that demolition is the first step in renovation. But, despite the sledgehammers you see on HGTV, it can often be a tedious, almost surgical process at times. It requires much patience in order to avoid causing harm to the structure. You don't just set fire to the house.

There are still many "seekers" in our culture. The problem is that the evangelical church is much better at introducing people to a brand than to Jesus. So, they become consumers rather than take up their cross and follow him.

Seminary taught me the language, but not culture, of the biblical authors. But one must know both in order to communicate effectively with another people. So, I learned to interpret the BIble through my western, post-enlightenment mindset, missing the wonder of storytelling in favor of bullet points
