Christmas decorations are going up all over town. The Shops at Crystals dressed up their trees (pictured), and The Bellagio pulled their fall exhibit out of the conservatory this morning, in preparation for their holiday display.

Saw the first Christmas tree of the year out in the wild today. Happy #Halloween everyone!

Stopped by the @unlvfinearts.bsky.social UNLV Art Walk on Friday. The Donna Beam Gallery had a really striking piece by Kim Johnson that drew me in. Exhibit is free to the public and worth your time if you're in Vegas.

The One World Aquarium repainted its walls lately. Now they have some very colorful otters.

One year ago today, the Tropicana was imploded to make way for a new baseball stadium, which is expected to be ready for the 2028 MLB season.

Construction progress after one year:

The Bellagio Atrium's fall exhibit features owls hiding in cozy rooms with books.

Nailed it.

I wonder if The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley is in their stack, too?

And now begins the five month Odyssey of avoiding construction on my morning walk while Vegas builds its temporary barriers, walkways, bridges, grandstands and viewing areas for the November F1 race, then takes them all back down.

My favorite fake trees have gotten their fall trimmings. This year, they went with... umbrellas?

The Wizard of Oz will be playing at the Sphere later this month, and the Palazzo/Venetian have started putting up flowery displays to promote it.

Got a little heatwave in Vegas this week. Even Orbi is sweating and sunburned.

Eataly, the Italian food court at the Park MGM, is one of my favorite little haunts in Vegas. Always smells like Parmesan. Here's a quiet early-morning pic from before the cafes open.

The US Post Office near UNLV went up in flames last week. Federal investigation has not been completed yet, but initial reports suggest it was an accident, not a metaphor.

Was planning on spending the day in bed reading this month's issue of @analogsf.bsky.social, but Buzz Aldrin beat me to it.

Sigh.

Guess I have to work today instead.

The Mirage-to-Hard-Rock Casino transformation was initially estimated to take three years. Here's construction progress after year one.

Just about to finish off my #Firefly rewatch. Right now, I'm at the inevitable stage where I'm angry because there aren't 30 more episodes. #DammitFOX

My new short story in @analogsf.bsky.social should hit bookshelves tomorrow (July/August 2025). Here's a sketch of my heroine and the dress I pictured for her date.

The Bellagio Conservatory has a wonderful homage to Jean-Honoré Fragonard's "Les Hasards heureux de l'escarpolette" this season. The @bellagiolasvegas.bsky.social did an amazing job. My photography, less so...

This rocket is made of chocolate (& blown sugar & sculpted fondant). On display now at the Aria in Las Vegas. Think they'll get mad if I nibble?

According to Wikipedia, Katrina is 4th (pre-2016) w/ 78.82% of available points.

Post-2016, Portugal 2017 is the highest w/ 77.03%, and are one of two winners where the jury and the public agreed (Netherlands 2019)

JJ is only winner post-2016 to win with less than half of the available votes (!)
May 19, 2025 at 5:13 PM
Austria won the contest with 10.02% of the total points, the lowest percentage required to win since 2016.

It was not the closest margin of victory (2016), but more votes went down-ballot this year. Guess that means there were a lot of great songs in 2025!

Happy #Eurovision! Cya next year! 💕

Also since 2016, no contestent had ever received the maximum points (12) from either the jury or the public vote and still come in last place, until San Marino did it yesterday.
May 18, 2025 at 6:13 PM
Since 2016, when the public/jury vote was separated, the highest amount of jury points received while scoring zero from the public vote was 93 (Austria, 2017).

Yesterday, Zoë Më got 214 jury points and none from the public, so if anyone got screwed yesterday, it was definitely
Switzerland.
