Our housing system is broken and today we take a step to fixing it.

This is a win for the whole community who backed the calls, and have now shifted the ACT Government to finally recognise housing as a social good like education and healthcare, rather than a commodity to generate wealth.

That means every decision about housing must now pass the test of fairness and affordability.

It means renters and residents can legally challenge bad laws or government inaction.

It puts people first.

And we call on the Federal Labor Government to urgently fix broken environmental laws before we see more native animals lost to unnecessary developments.

Now, we call on the ACT Labor Government up their game and protect remaining natural temperate grassland habitat - otherwise there will be nowhere left in the wild to reintroduce dragons from the breeding program.

In the three months since the election - and despite Labor claiming Australia voted for climate action and protecting the environment - they've approved the climate-wrecking extension of the dirty gas North West Shelf facility to 2070 and are now pushing the Earless Dragon towards extinction.

The Federal Labor Government has time and time again sided with corporations over the very people and planet they were elected to stand up for.

But instead Labor signed off the project with some conditions which are an attempt to buy the goodwill of the community.

Actions speak louder than words - and this not a one off but a trend.

This is despite the hundreds of Canberrans who told the Labor government to save the dragon and stop the road development until mitigation measures were actually found to be effective and useful.

The Greens have voted against this funding every year since the latest agreement with the race club was signed simply because this is a bad deal for Canberrans.

Horse racing profits off the harm caused to everyday people and prioritises gambling profits over the wellbeing of horses.

It’s time to walk the talk. Labor need to stop wasting taxpayer money on this ridiculous handout and deliver the services people actually want and need in their lives.

Yet when asked by the ACT Greens today, the gambling reform Minister would not say whether she will actively advocate against renewing this ludicrous agreement when it expires in 2027.

They actually acknowledged that the industry makes most of their profits off online betting and gambling advertising - the things Labor say they want to reduce in the ACT.

As the party holding the sole balance of power in the ACT Parliament, the Greens have a responsibility to use our position to deliver real outcomes for our community - and that’s exactly what we took into our negotiations with Labor over the past few days.

This commitment is a clear admission from Labor that their original health levy was an unfair tax on everyday people who are struggling with the cost of living and we welcome this step change.
