Even in his retirement fight Dustin Poirier still put on a spectacular display of MMA. I wrote about it.

At 155 pounds there exists a quartet of fighters who are not defined by their accomplishments and peaks, but instead by how they fought. By the violence and entertainment they guaranteed when they stepped into the cage.

I hope we remember them.

Two sequences here where Edgar is able to get Aldo on the fence through overcommittals from Aldo and a lot of jabbing. Aldo however is able to get off the fence usually through some combination of pivoting, jabbing, and framing.

Great range management from Aldo allows him to get out of the way of Edgar's kicks, stick and move with his jab, and also prevent Edgar's counter entries. In the last clip though you can see Frankie realize this and switch to a step up low kick since it's faster.

Great cagecraft in the 1st from Aldo. Pivoting, exiting on angles to minimize strikes, and fighting for the center to give himself space to back up.

Aldo doing great work on the counter in round 1

Frankie Edgar trying to work in on Jose Aldo early in the 1st

Great pivot and hook from Aldo he- HOLY SHIT HE GOT LEG KICKED SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE OH MY GOD HIS LEG FUCKING EXPLODED
December 12, 2024 at 6:40 PM
fully convinced a thermobaric bomb is less devastating than an Aldo leg kick. This is like the 2nd leg kick he'd thrown not even like Edgar's leg had been chewed up.

Max came out in the 3rd looking to wrist trap and handfight Topuria's lead hand. The issue is that he can't keep his hand by his chin, it has to be in neutral space now. This makes it easier for Topuria to handtrap it. He drags it down and cracks Max with a 2, leading to the KO 15 seconds later.
