One of the main things neuroscientists do not like to deal with is degeneracy and the irreversibility of the activity -> function relationship, because that would force them to acknowledge that most analysis methods like decoding and functional connectivity are meaningless.
So functional cell types certainly exist in the spatial system. There is no doubt about this. However, this paper shows that you cannot know that you have found them by just decoding space, or even by showing spatial selectivity! This is a very important thing to tell the field.

this whole interview, can you imagine having to filter everything you say through four layers of "i am already a literal god, but it is not ready yet for you to see that, so imminently everyone should prepare for me becoming a god, but next year."
I laughed at loud. These people are so pathetic; our enemies are numbskulls. They will kill us all and still not know hs physics.

COWEN: The stupidest question possible: Why don’t we just make more GPUs?

ALTMAN: Because we need to make more electrons.

still thinking about that neural basis of speech talk from Eddie Chang on Sunday. Have loved their work for years, that might have been the best talk I have ever seen. I don't really say this that much lately, but truly inspiring work.

A robust ecosystem of many ways of having all the money stolen from my wallet will likely prove to be the most stable and productive ecosystem of ways to have all the money stolen from my wallet, rather than "one size fits all" solutions like "not being robbed"
An excellent piece on the scholarly publishing ecosystem, by Rick Anderson.

As is the case in biological ecosystems, a publishing ecosystem that has high levels of diversity with lots of niches will likely prove to be the most stable AND productive, rather than “one-size-fits-all” solutions.

Hello #SfN2025, I'm here presenting sciop.net, archiving at-risk information and bootstrapping a hybrid federated/p2p archive, rebuilding NWB and integrating acquisition and analysis with lightweight pipelines.

I'll be at ZZ14 in the Monday afternoon session :)

you know that our information systems are an utter failure, a primary barrier to liberation, the primary instrument of social control when it takes 5 years to communicate the idea that "the virus that killed everyone is an aerosol" to 0.1% of people.

Altman has been quite clear about his strategy.

From the 2008 crash he learned that if you bind enough of the economy to your business you can do whatever you like; government will decide the rules no longer apply.

What he's selling is unaccountabilty.
I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide.

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

What does OpenAI offer the world?
“authors & publishers who filed a lawsuit against the Sam Altman-led firm have secured access to internal Slack messages… discussing the mass deletion of a pirated books dataset… A NY district court ordered OpenAI to hand over the communications regarding data deletion”

There are upsides to having the unit of social media be a community with shared stakes in its moderation and upkeep, rather than the unit being a single account on one big global soup. People notice when a big swell of bot accounts happens next door, but not when they come from the void.
