This arrived at the perfect time, just as I'm preparing to cover Taiwan in my modern China module.

When all the books you accumulated during graduate school and life in New York arrive after having sat in a storage room for 12 years but you realize that the shelves they are supposed to sit on are somehow full of books you've accumulated since then.

I still find it kind of charming that doing work for university presses results in getting paid in a big stack of books.

A nice surprise at the Jubilee Library in Brighton. A small exhibit on HK, complete with Lennon wall.

I keep coming back to this James Baldwin quote these days.
"The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality."

I made a joke back in 2020, asking that folks identify the pro-democracy and the pro-Beijing parties below before attempting to analyze the disqualifications or the primaries. It aged poorly, considering only two of the parties still exist today.

Great talk by George Lawson at the LSE tonight, on expanding understandings of revolution and prospects for our unruly present.

The Cadaver Synod - the religious trial of Pope Formosus, seven months after his death - is probably my favorite pope story. Everything around the trial is wild, from the riots brought on by Formosus' death to the fate of his prosecutor (Pope Stephen VI, who died by strangulation a few months later)

I've assigned the Task Force on U.S.-China Policy memo from last month to students in my History and Politics of Modern China module and we'll discuss it tomorrow. I have to say that Elizabeth Economy's comment only rings more true a few weeks after publication. asiasociety.org/sites/defaul...
