Oil on linen 24x36. The figure Day lifts up the daylight into the night. The figure is a semi-nude in a classical pose with an expression of benevolence. The picture itself is a bit warmer than real life.

I did this be on a textured gesso board. Meant for watercolor but I used oils. I could not move paint at all and it sucked up the paint so quickly. Fun experience but lesson learned.

WIP - getting into the final stages of this diptych. This classical pose is ‘Day’. The lighting in my studio isn’t set up for pictures so it’s a bit darker and warmer than in irl. ‘Night’ is finished. I’ll show the diptych together when both reach that stage.
A female in a classic pose with a breast exposed depicts day. She wears chthon made of the morning sky while also pulling the light of day into the darkness of night Some details to work out but I’m feeling much better with it than I was a few days ago. The legs are a bit dark but I’ll return and soften them up be keep the glow intact so it’s more harmonious with the upper body.

It’s over layered/produced. The instrumentation is so ornate and bombastic, the lead vocal is powerhouse contrast.
And it all just works despite it. RIP Jim Steinman &

Happy Halloween 🎃 Cover to Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf and Jim Steinman. Artwork by the incomparable Richard Corben A muscled shirtless man holding onto his overpowered motorcycle as it explodes from the ground of graveyard with a multitude of gravestones everywhere The album is 70s excess turned all the way up. It is ridiculously orchestral and filled with every musical trope, convention & cliche and should have made it impossible to chart. It was ELO, ELP, Genesis, & Rick Wakeman taken to infinity and then hard charging guitar and bass lines on top with Meatloaf commanding the songs in a turn of force & tenderness. Then, Steinman’s classically trained feel comes in around the edges and knocks you over with baroque piano flourishes. So wrong but perfectly right. My favorite song? Depends on the day. Today though, it’s the album version of the title track.

WIP Back to a different bigger project. This will be the most figures I’ve crammed into a painting. Have to get more flow with the interior figures but this is the stage to fix it
WIP. A graphite sketch/study 16x20 of four figures on the left a male plays guitar, a girl plays drum, a boy demonstrates yo yo tricks and a female plays bass. I still have to put one more figure in silhouette the crowd in foreground , add tech and signage Bonus points if you know the band.

An all a prima portrait grisaille study of a lady. Hair is a bit wonky do to my poor planning. If it wasn’t a preparatory piece I’d be upset but it’s just part of work leading up to a bigger piece.

Today’s alla prima exercise - full figure walking. I was working on skin tone. I spent the morning studying and imitating Roberto Ferri. Then this afternoon tore into this fast and furious. Allotted out Permalba for my white. Buttery but a bit sticky to clean as opposed to just Titanium White

I’m finding it ‘sinks in’ over certain areas of a painting. Over my car orange mixes and an ultramarine /ivory black mix. The brown areas are fine and hold the gloss 1/

First time I’ve used an Ampersand textured clay board. It was not as much fun as my Centurion linen boards but I got it for $2 in the our Atelier store. Not a very sympathetic whine, I know, but I wanted to see if what it would be like since I’ve used the nontextexured one and was fine with it. My one big complaint it was difficult to move paint around and soaked in quickly, as the painting kinda shows.
