In the wake of this tragic election, I’m remembering how I found comfort years ago in Janine Benyus’ observation that “we are a young species.” Maybe we’ll make it, maybe not..
But I’m re-watching her beautiful short video about #Biomimicry anyway and finding some comfort.

I mentioned this stat from Alisa Wood of KKR in a talk I did a few weeks ago, but did you know: There are more private equity firms in the United States than there are McDonald's? (~19,000 vs. 14,000) In 1980, there were 24 PE firms *total* in the U.S. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Private equity firm Sycamore Partners bought Walgreens.

Now Walgreens has stopped giving most workers paid vacation on Thanksgiving, Christmas and other major holidays.

Private equity takeovers are a disaster for workers, and customers.

It's ONLY been 65 years since six year old Ruby Bridges walked through the halls of William Frantz Elementary as the first Black child to attend an all white school. Met with mobs and hate, her bravery and courage helped change the course of history for this nation.

Defunding scientists for the nationality of who they co-author with or who they train.

One of the most radical attack on freedom of speech in US history. A far right nationalist destruction of US science. Such a shameful time to be an American that this racist stupidity has become mainstream.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

The civil service laws are fragile because of this:

"a judge-made constitutional order ... with the roles of Congress, the President, and the agencies increasingly being defined by the Supreme Court according to higher-law principles of its own making."

There is no future for this country as a democracy without Supreme Court reform, as @joshtpm.bsky.social said yesterday.

But there is something we can all do now: say the RIFs are obviously illegal, and publicly disagree with SCOTUS. Ask your Congressmembers to say that too.

I wrote an explainer about the mass firings—the RIFs.

The RIFs all year have been clearly illegal. Russell Vought is using them to lawlessly clean out federal agencies. Lower court judges have said so. But the Calvinball Supreme Court has allowed them. 1/

What can you do?

Speak out on social media, try to get on local news including TV and radio— you can do that in your personal capacity.

They did this by a series of Friday night news dumps. Which means Trump cares about publicity around this! /3

Curing cancer is hard!

We don’t want political hires, we want to rely on the best scientists as judged by the scientific community, as judged by peers and experts. That’s the way we do good science.

Speaking as a government worker:

The paper that our whole professional class reads doesn’t know that it is not normal to end whole agencies lawlessly, shred the Constitution based on laughable legal justification, and kill cancer and Alzheimer’s research???

Either we have failed or they have.
Quick — someone tell the New York Times that the situation in early October, when the shutdown began, was not “normal.”

- NO evidence the building was "filled with TdA terrorists."

Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.
