meal's desirability. It scarcely seems worth the work to still, in the end, be stuck with the same disliked food every day. But every time you suggest that maybe you don't want to keep coming to this restaurant and eating this meal, that maybe it would be better if you just didn't do that anymore, everyone says you're crazy. How could you just not want to eat there?? You've GOT to eat it. It gets better, they tell you. Your companions say they'll be very sad if you stop eating with them, why would you want to do that to them? None of them are able to pay for your meal, mind you, or capable of changing the menu such that, instead of dressing up something you don't like to be more palatable, you're actually getting something you DO like. But they will certainly make you feel bad for not wanting to suffer through it just so they aren't sad. Some will even suggest forcing you to keep eating against your will, for your own good, hoping that you'll eventually learn to love the food you've never really liked from the start—or at least be more quiet about it. They might even set up charities about preventing people from leaving the restaurant on their own terms as a way of assuaging their guilt over those who chose to stop. At no point will anyone consider stopping a valid, rational, or reasonable choice. They will always consider you broken, damaged, deficient, sick, in need of work; they will never consider that maybe this restaurant, this meal, and all that comes with them simply aren't for everyone. They cannot conceive that maybe all of their suggestions are just ways to skirt around the central unfixable problem, or are ways to kick the can down the road for another day, another year. They will never accept that perhaps you really do see the situation and your feelings about it with clarity, and that asking for the check one last time is the best solution, the one that does the least harm long-term. Their reasons for not seeing this may be systemic, spiritual, social, religious, economic, or obscured by emotion, by their own fears and anxieties, by the little voice that tells them maybe they don't want to keep eating this meal either. Their reasons have next to nothing to do with you. There is no shame in opting out, of owning up to your truth if this meal just isn't working, if you can't take even one more day eating it. It may make others sad, but why should they get to ask you to keep enduring the unendurable? Why would they wish that on anyone?

You've been brought to a restaurant, not by your choice, but one needs to eat, so here you are. It's a restaurant that serves one dish, one you're not especially fond of, with several different variations. The dish does not please you. You're told that one can order a different variation, but you can't afford it, or it's in limited supply, or you have to get the rare ingredients for it yourself in competition with lots of other people who actually do like the dish and will fight hard to have it their way. No matter what, though, it's still the same basic dish however you dress it up. But one needs to eat, so you eat it. This happens every day. Your companions don't seem to mind. They tell you you can just order a different variation, what's the problem? Other people can barely afford sides, you should be happy you have the meal. They ask if you've tried talking to someone about how you feel, maybe they can help you appreciate the food more. They suggest that you take medicine that will make it easier to eat the meal, or maybe let you feel happier about eating it or more capable of one day being able to afford one of the better variations of the dish you don't really like to begin with. They say that maybe volunteering to help others eat better will make you feel the food was more worthwhile, or perhaps you could join an organization that spends a lot of time and money on trying to make the restaurant serve even better versions of the dish, despite institutional indifference from everyone running the restaurant. They suggest that maybe bringing different companions, maybe a partner or even your own family, might help you want to eat the dish more. They suggest that you might prefer to eat at one of the restaurant's other locations—all of which serve the same meal. They suggest you might have more of an appetite if you exercised first or drank more water. Maybe you can meditate after eating the food you didn't enjoy, or practice being mindful instead of focusing on how much you don't like the meal. At the end of the day, though, it's still the same dish and you still don't particularly like it, but you keep eating. You start to get tired of going to this restaurant, but every day you wind up there anyway, the same food on the table in front of you. Some days it's a little fresher than others, or seasoned better, but you can't quite muster excitement over incremental, inconsistent, inconsequential changes to a base meal that you still do not want. Dining there is not free, and just maintaining the ability to afford the base meal that you don't actually like comes with costs and aggravations that wear on you, but the completion of which makes no change to the
