The dead dragon filled the top of the valley, its head on the long neck partially blocking the little stream. "Well, they smell as bad dead as they do alive," Blocker said, shifting in his saddle to look up into the cirque, and the vast scaly bulk of the thing. "Worse maybe. How long is she going to be, you reckon?" Ton the outrider jumped down from the streamside rock and gathered his pony's reins. "She comes down now." Blocker turned his horse down the valley and called to his little troop of Shindo, "Hai! Fall in behind her," he said in din Shin. He was riding his sure-footed mare and turned in the saddle to look back up the valley as the Amershan picked her way among the stream-side boulders. As she came down the stream her big gelding was not as confident in the rocks as Blocker's mare. The chief priest on his mule apparently knew enough not to try to hurry his mount and the other priests or acolytes or whatever they were scrambled through the rocks on foot. She was well ahead of the ecclesiastical party when she came level with Blocker.

My dad was a chief in the Navy. He retired in 1945 when there weren’t any Senior Chiefs or Master Chiefs. There were just Chief Petty Officers, who ran the Navy in the way that seemed best to them. Navy enlisted personnel wear hashmarks on their sleeves, one hashmark for each four years of service. At first they are red, like the chevrons of rank, but after 12 years chevrons and hashmarks are gold. A chief with 25 years in wears a crow, three chevrons and a rocker, for his rank and six gold hashmarks for his length of service. This is a great deal of gold running down his sleeve. Once a lieutenant j.g. got his feelings hurt and complained to the Captain. Now a Captain in the Navy is called a four-striper because his/her rank is indicated by the four gold stripes encircling the cuff of the uniform coat. A lieutenant junior grade has one stripe. (This is better than an ensign, who only has a half stripe.) The Captain, none too patiently, listened to the j.g.’s complaint about the Chief’s supposed rudeness, leaned back behind his desk, and pulled on his pipe. “Well, Mr. Smith, even if the Chief was insolent, there’s nothing I can do about it. He’s got more gold on his sleeve than I have.”

It used to be, here in the balmy Southland, that when you got to be fifteen and a half and started in to pestering the old man about getting a .22, he’d say, Well all right, I guess, for your birthday, but, he’d say, but, you’re gonna have to take a gun safety course. So you’d go down to the hardware store and go back to the bulletin board and find the old yellowed “Gun Safety Course” card and carefully copy the phone number, and call it and get no answer because the card said “Between 5:00 and 8:00 PM Monday-Thursday” so then you’d call at 5:01 on Monday and get told the next class was in three weeks here’s the address to send in your name and address and (pretty nominal) fee, and you’d mark it on the calendar and start crossing off the days. And then when you finished the course which was taught by an old rangy guy missing two fingers off his left hand who had fought in either WWII or Korea or maybe both and had a lot of eminently sensible information about gun handling and gun safety, you got a card from the NRA, which you showed to the old man and sure enough that sweet bolt action .22 showed up on your birthday. That’s what the NRA used to do before they went crazy.

When the plane passes over the ridge, the distance from the shadow to the belly is less than half the length of the plane. If the plane is something like a 727 it’s 75 feet? Less? Scared some jackrabbits!
