Funny thing is that I was SO familiar with that section after a while that when a book was misplaced, I'd stand *away* from the bookshelves to get a broad perspective, and could spot the one I was looking for by color and style of the spine and font. Customers thought it was magic, LOL.

There was at most 2 shelves to scan for a category, so as long as people could spot the category they were looking for with the brightly colored "bookends", the particular book wasn't too hard to spot (assuming it wasn't stuck in the wrong category).

The *only* time I've done this successfully was working at Borders, and computer books was my section to maintain.

With so many sub categories, alpha order in each was a mess.

Start each section with the yellow Dummies books, and ended them with red Wrox or blue MS Cert. Middle didn't matter much.

I hate when they try to break good customer service down to stupid metrics like "Every customer must be greeted within 30 seconds of walking into the store" (real example from a friend).

The real secret sauce is just simply having an "open" demeanor that invites questions when people have them.

Which always always reminds me of a local news story from the 90s, where they interviewed a super-excited middle-aged couple who had mortgaged their home to open a Pog Store in the mall...

I have friends that like them, but yeah.

And basic saturation. Everybody that likes them has them. And everybody that likes them and has them has too many of them, so are cutting back their purchases, if not stopping altogether.

Have to be ready for that if you sell fad items.

I had a 4-track cassette recorder for recording music. Mine didn't have the double speed, but some of the higher-end ones did for that reason.

There was even one machine that somehow fit 8 tracks onto the 1/4" cassette tape. It probably used double speed?
