There is something much more deeply broken with link sharing than Twitter or Facebook's infamous downrankings. 8 likes and a quote tweet on a post with a broken link. People don't read the actual articles anymore.

I say this as someone that roots for Bluesky and thinks they will eventually figure things out but likes are declining again. My hypothesis is there is structurally something that promotes national politics here, and it suffocates the ability to talk about anything else. We need topics. #atproto

Was playing with making additional AI chatbots available on path.pub and finding Perplexity Pro and Perplexity Deep Research a really nice pairing. Pro gets you a fast answer. Deep Research finds the nuance.

R* is a controversial concept, and DR actually figures that out.

RPA does a lot of good stuff, but when it comes to AI & datacenters, it doesn't seem to have heard of "the cloud". If the goal is AI jobs, it has nothing to do with where the data centers are located: rpa.org/news/lab/pla...

Love Reading Rainbow is back, but it's worth thinking about what is actually destroying literacy – smartphones and short-form video. Great newsletter about it in the Cultural Capital newsletter here: jmarriott.substack.com/p/the-dawn-o...

Decimation of local media is harming accountability on safe streets. Even while public interest is surging in Hudson County and NJ, there is no longer comprehensive coverage of fatal crashes. Two crash deaths in Union City right before school started, zero news coverage. Jersey Journal used to cover

But ChatGPT-5 Thinking went to the source and read the original White House announcement and was able to identify and on-going discrepancy even before clarifications today that the fee was one-time.

Interesting: Stumbled upon a ChatGPT 5 mode that seems to attach a confidence to each statement. It prompted me if I wanted to do this and saved it to memory.

I wonder what the confidence represents. Always a chance the LLM is just trying to please, but seemed like a programmed mode to me.

I don't think it's that simple to say, here's a good solution, why doesn't everyone agree, and why haven't we adopted it. The US – unique among developed countries – has not adopted many easy, cheap, empirically proven solutions to decrease crash deaths. Let alone AVs are an expensive solution.

Newark stroads are really something. I think there's actually a lot of demand for safer streets in Newark, but Baraka hasn't done anything, and there's not a local org that I can see supporting.

Don't know what the Newark politics are, but how are all these parking lots next to Penn Station still?

Curious how they envisioned these park pavilions being used back when they were constructed. Without a better reason like a food vendor, a stage, they are not well-used today.

This is the schedule, by NJ law: www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/...

Yes I share the surprise. It's bail-in for extremely anti-social and costly behavior. As a state, I don't know why we feel so bad for bad drivers over crash victims.
August 14, 2025 at 4:13 PM
NYC: Drivers with 30 or more speed camera violations are 50 times as likely to be involved in in a crash that causes severe injury or death.

NJ: What are speed cameras? Oh, did I tell you yet about how I don't like red light cameras? Also move out of the left-lane so I can speed *ahem* I mean pass.

Very interesting truck driver dataset. Speeding is predictive of a future crash, but most predictive are:
1. Failure to yield and (2.4X)
2. Failure to use / improper signal violations (2.2X)

I would guess a lot actually does apply to regular drivers too: truckingresearch.org/wp-content/u...

PATH also just closed one of the main 33rd St exits during the day with no signs, no announcements, no construction. Cruelly and pointlessly tacks on another 5 minutes to every rider's trip that was going to head out that side.
August 3, 2025 at 4:21 PM
PATH has unexpected delays again. The countdowns are run with the temperament of a two-year old that doesn't want to go home. WTC said 0 minutes. Then it said 4 minutes which is impossible since the trains can't arrive at the same time. Then finally Delay after it blew past the 4 minutes as well.

I have one messed up brain. Been watching The Wire for the first time, and what I notice when they move to the vacant lots is all the Tree of Heaven everywhere.

Turns out, supply-and-demand applies to the housing market. The core of what we need to do is first *admit* there are too few homes, and then build like we understand what a *shortage* is. Refusing is unscientific and denying is misinformation.

PSA: Air quality in New York & New Jersey is extremely bad today due to wildfire smoke coming from Canada. Mask and run air filters if you can.

I missed this was happening all day yesterday too. Very weird there is no local news coverage about it: map.purpleair.com/air-quality-...
