A Gold Dust Day Gecko on the side of my friends house on the Big Island of Hawaii. Native to Madagascar and like all eight species, geckos in Hawaii are non-native.

The month of May brings colonies of Chimney Bees ( Diadasia bituberculata ) to my favorite trail. While it seems risky to be down among them like this, I’ve never been stung. They live in nesting aggregations.

On May 10, 1980 I drove around the barriers for the red zone to get to a ridge on the west side that I knew had a clear view to Mt. St. Helens to see a minor eruption and get this photo.
