Pocket reckons about books and life

Sometimes it’s the little things: From the ‘60s : my Dad’s decimal reckoner - which I don’t use - and his Collins English Gem dictionary which, of all the dictionaries I own and of all those on line, is my go to, every single day #pukapuka #booksky #dictionaries

Why, oh why haven’t I been reading more Chekhov? Or, more specifically, Chekhov through the lens of the multi-talented George Saunders?

Those thoughts reframed: minus the regret - no time for that - thank goodness I’m on to it now. #amustread #booksky #pukapuka #Chekhov #GeorgeSaunders

In stark contrast to my previous read, Catherine Chidgey’s The Book of Guilt, it might seem that in My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout, not much happens. #booksky #literaryfiction #books #ElizabethStrout #MyNameIsLucyBarton 🧵1/4

Just finished The Book of Guilt. It’s gripping, discomforting and, like all good dystopian novels, all too believable. The characters are satisfyingly layered, the plot rewardingly complex. This is Catherine Chidgey at her finest. Highly recommended. #pukapuka #booksky #books #kikorangi

Clear by Welsh writer Carys Davies is a small but exquisite book. Superbly crafted, it deserves the accolades that it has received since it was published in 2024..🧵1/2 #pukapuka #blueskybooks #books #historicalfiction #welshwriter

The Occupation by #ChloeAdams
What an outstanding debut. Inspired by a family story and backed up by careful, thoughtful research, Chloe Adams has brought history alive. Highly recommended.

Intrigued by the marginalia in this library copy of Camus’ The Outsider aka The Stranger.
Earlier the reader marked out a section from pp 39-40. Why? Who are they? What were they thinking? And what might come up next? #Absurd #pukapuka #blueskybooks #TheStranger #Camus

Kāwhia harbour this evening. Not only was there this unusual rainbow but Orcas were in the harbour although I missed seeing those.

What a difference a week makes. Quiet on the beach this morning. The godwits/ ngā kuaka are back. But best of all, at the stream, away from any human activity, we saw an adult Royal Spoon bill/ kōtuku ngutupapa, with its young. What a delight!! Also dotterill #alliswell #bodyclockreset #kikorangi

There were lots of dogs off lead, too, all despite these sign posts.
Great to see so many people enjoying the beach in the early morning. Wish they’d take care of the bird life, too. #kikorangi

Lots of others have enjoyed the beach, too, despite the regulations saying no vehicles on this part of the beach. And the consequence is that most of the seabirds have disappeared. No godwits, no royal spoonbills, and no dotterill anywhere on my walk this morning. Evidence of lots of cars. 🧵2/3
