In BAYOU MAGIC, I write about Black mermaids who accompanied Africans to America. I want young readers to know there are many diverse, global mermaid tales! There are mermaids, like Mama Wata, who use their voice (rather than sacrificing it) to protect their communities. #BlackHistoryMonth #kidlit

My grandmother continues to be my greatest inspiration. As a child I would sit on the porch listening to Grandma Ernestine tell me stories...about her southern childhood, family, slavery, love & death. It is this African American oral tradition that has influenced my writing. Here I am on the right!

I once came across a reference to Marie Laveau in a Creole cookbook. I was struck by this larger-than-life voodoo queen, this Black woman of power. She inspired my first novel, VOODOO DREAMS, published 34 years ago. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM

I was a junior at @carnegiemellon.bsky.social when I first discovered Black women wrote books. I saw a copy of Gayl Jones’s Corregidora on the library shelf. It was a revelation! Her writing continues to inspire me. #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth
