on the surface. Like sure the fuckboi villain of the second half did drag the anime down somewhat, but certainly not as much as villain in the second arc of SAO did so what gives? We should have gotten more dammit

interesting protagonist than Kirito, and feels like a much better exploration of a self-loathing gamer kid (which kinda makes me wonder if that's why it was less popular). Even the core romance feels better handled from the outset even though it feels like much more transparent wish fulfillment

But seriously though, it did so much better from the outset. It actually sticks to a single game for its setting and the game itself feels like it was thought out to some degree mechanically compared to early SAO just doing whatever works in the moment. Haru is a way more
