I am routinely disappointed to see seemingly awake/aware folks using a deeply fraught & offensive phrase "banana republic" AT ALL but especially in relation to our current abhorrent, & genocidal regime.

This 2016 piece from @thebaffler.com is a vital read.

The liberals who use this phrase mean to conjure the image of a distant and unstable tropical country that cannot be bothered to behave responsibly-a failed state of feckless and cartoonish leaders, broken institutions, and unserious citizens. But looking at the history behind the term reveals something else: "banana republics" like Honduras and Guatemala were troubled in no small part because American capitalism and imperialism wanted them that way. The behavior that it describes is perfectly horrifying, but the cavalier use of the term today is morally obtuse: revealing a lack of awareness of America's history of exploiting those very same banana republics.

I'm still processing the bit about desire “He desired. He desired desiring. He desired being desired. He desired desire itself." It reminded me of the annual Bulwer Lytton contest.

My favorite entry involved a libidinous frog and a pillaged princess.
"The sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept along the greensward, and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle window, revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder, gaping in frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her, disbelieving the magnitude of the frog's deception, screaming madly, 'You lied!'"

Today I overheard someone say that the pervasive condescension, minimization & disrespect towards service workers is because so many people don't recognize us as fellow human beings. They only see us as "part of the building."

Oof! 😣
But it was going to get a brown building that has been anthropomorphized with Windows that look like eyes and doors that look like a mouth. The nose is created by part of the building jutting out in the middle where a nose would be on a face. There's a bicycle leaned up against it and telephone wires creating a shadow giving the building the appearance that its nose is running

You didn't post a screenshot of the so-called offending post because if you did it would be obvious to everyone that she was riffing on Folsom Prison Blues on a qt article that besmirched Johnny Cash. There was no threat. You owe her an apology and immediate reinstatement.

It seemed impossible anything more could be said about Bundy etc,but then I found this. It centers the land & environment. You don't need a geology or cartography degree to appreciate. The author writes w such passion on them that you'll feel like you earned a masters in both by the time you finish
