Write about Goalies and the Golden Knights for The Athletic.
Because he's set, with his feet underneath him in a narrow stance, when Hagel passes over to a wide-open Nikita Kucherov, Dostál is ready to explode across.

Once again, he doesn't slide out of control. If he did, Kucherov's deke against the grain would've worked.

The biggest key to the entire play is how early Dostál gets to his spot on this initial pass. He doesn't predict a one-timer and butterfly slide out. He takes as much depth as he can while still coming to a hard stop and setting his feet.

This save by Lukáš Dostál on Nikita Kucherov demonstrates so much of what makes him an awesome goalie.

Petr Mrázek’s new mask features Coach Bombay and Goldberg from the original Mighty Ducks movies.

Pretty cool homage, and the wings on the sides look awesome from a distance.

NHL's goals saved above expected leaders (via @evolving-hockey.com)

The United States has an embarrassment of riches in the crease, and quite a few Czech goalies are having an excellent start to the season. This doesn't even include Karel Vejmelka, who has been very good for Utah.

Connor Hellebuyck’s new mask is one of my favorites in the NHL.

900 goals for Alex Ovechkin

Still zero on Akira Schmid, though.

I’m out at Lightning practice this afternoon.

It’s so much fun to watch Vasilevskiy up close. He is so insanely precise with his footwork, and light on his edges.

Almost like a….. cat

Are we seeing a changing of the guard in the Canadiens crease?

Sam Montembeault is off to a rough start, while rookie Jakub Dobes has been stellar. Should he be earning more starts?

I chatted with @mbultman.bsky.social & @marklazerus.bsky.social about it on today’s podcast ⤵️

He did the same thing on Colorado’s first goal of the game, but not as extreme. You can see, he projects his glove out, but not as far, and Necas beats him with a perfect shot.

If he had it a few more inches out, it’s in his glove. Even still he forced a perfect shot and Necas happened to nail it.

This angle shows how important it is that he extended that glove out as far as he did.

The closer the glove is to the puck, the lower it has to be to cover the top of the net.

Show-stopping save here by Jake Oettinger to save the game for the Dallas Stars in the final minute of OT.

I love how he attacks the puck with his glove. He stretched to project it out as far as he could to take away the vertical angle to the cross bar.
